The synagogue in Subotica was built in 1902 in the Art Nouveau style. In 1974, the synagogue was declared a cultural monument of exceptional importance. It was built according to the project of Budapest architects Marcel Komor and Deza Jakab, an associate of the architect Eden Lehner, the creator of the Hungarian variant of Art Nouveau. The synagogue is one of the most valuable Central European achievements of this type of sacred architecture. It is characterized by bold and modern architectural solutions, stained glass decorations, as well as stylizations taken from Hungarian folklore, such as stylized rose, lily and carnation petals and peacock feathers. The central large dome, which symbolizes the universe, rests on four smaller domes, which symbolize the four corners of the world. The dome over the central part is enriched with constructive innovations, so that it rests on an iron structure supported by eight iron columns.
