It was officially opened to the public by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on June 13, 1994, starting from the first phase. The second phase of the museum is located in the ancient building of Guthrie and was opened on May 23, 1998 by Poh Ah Tiam, Chairman of the National Tourism, Culture and Environment Committee.

The Maritime Museum was constructed after the Portuguese ship, Flor De Lamar. It housed in a life-size replica of a 16th century Portuguese man-of-war anchored in the river. It displays Melaka maritime history and the golden age of Melaka Sultanate as the Emporium of the East.Measuring 34 meters high,36 meters long and eight meters wide, the 'loot' inside includes models of famous ships, maps, cargo and their passengers that once sailed into Melaka waters and left their mark on its shores. 海事博物馆是仿照葡萄牙船只“Flor De Lamar”建造的。 它位于停泊在河中的一艘 16 世纪葡萄牙战舰的真人大小复制品中。 它展示了马六甲的航海历史和马六甲苏丹国作为东方商场的黄金时代。高34米、长36米、宽8米，里面的“战利品”包括著名船只的模型、地图、货物及其乘客的模型， 曾经驶入马六甲水域并在海岸上留下了印记。 √9am-5.30pm
