The mythological hero Cúchulainn was fatally wounded after fighting off Queen Maeve's forces single-handedly during the Cattle-raid of Cooley saga (The Táin). According to legend, Cúchulainn tied himself to this standing stone so that he could stay upright and face the opposing army.
