Specialising in Japanese yakitori and small plates, it’s great for picky morsels of thigh and spring onion or chicken wing with shiso. You can order as much or as little as you like before a big night out, and as it’s on Kingsland Road, which has loads of bars and pubs, it makes a great starting point. People go wild for their katsu curry Scotch eggs, a boiled egg that’s wrapped in meat, deep-fried then to be dipped in rich and sweet katsu sauce.

Just around the corner from the Royal Opera House, Jidori is the second outpost of the already much-loved small plates restaurant of the same name in Dalston. The main focus of the menu here is their yakitori - grilled chicken skewers - with dishes inspired by the smoky backstreets of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district. The skewers here are made from the highest quality chickens and cooked over Tokyo’s famous Kama-Asa Shoten grill, so are as authentic as any you would find in Japan. Their homemade pickles, tuna sashimi and donburi rice bowls are also well worth checking out. We particularly love their 12-seater private dining and karaoke room – with over 8,000 songs to choose from.

Authentic yakitori has come to East London in the form of Jidori, which boasts a custom-made Kama-Asa grill imported from Tokyo. As the restaurant is named after a special breed of chicken, it’s no surprise that the meat is the star here, with virtually every part of the animal appearing in the yakitori. Don’t fill up on the skewers, though; the katsu curry scotch egg is a great Japanese twist on the English classic, and the sole dessert – ginger ice cream, miso caramel, sweet potato crisps and black sesame praline – is a moreish blend of sweet and savoury.
