This is the birth of San Diego's earliest settlers. This is the first mission in California established by the Franciscan Order (Catholic). Because of this, lots of area called "Mission" in San Diego. Like Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Mission Valley, etc.

I believe it's the oldest building in San Diego and the first mission established in California. It is still a fully functioning Catholic Parish and you can attend daily mass there if desired.

The first mission built by Spanish monk Junipero Sera, it is at the beginning of El Camino Real, a road linking the California Spanish Missions built in the 1700's.
