Mathikettan Shola National Park is a 12.82 km national park in Poopara village of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki district of Kerala state, South India. It notified area national park in 21 November 2003.Considering the unique nature of the shola forest in Mathikettan and its importance as an elephant strip, the state government has declared it as a National park in 2008. Central government has notified its area varying from zero to one kilometre around the boundary as eco sensitive zone. The name Mathikettan derives from the Tamil word literally meaning 'mind confuser', as the local people say that one forgets the path once he enters into the park.[citation needed] It notified as a national park to protect the wildlife and rich biodiversity of the area. The Shola forest in the area is bestowed with unit with geological fauna and flora and geomorphological wealth. This tamil name for this beautiful place literally means “The forest of the guy who lost his mind” . But what is the reason for this strange name? The story will give a run to any thrilling film. Long years ago, so long ago nobody knows how long there lived 18 sages (Sidhar) lived peacefully but decided to pass the gift of logitivity and good health to the ordinary humans. They decided to mix dangerous poisons in the right mix so that it converts into a solid object not found in nature but gives immense benefits . They sculpted four Lord Murugan Idols out of which one is in Palani, another in Poomparai, one got destroyed and the fourth is in this place. In order to protect the idol of that immense power the sages covered the place with lot of herbs and medical plants which distracts the mind of the person coming with evil ideas.
