A proper traditional British bar hidden down a close off the Royal Mile. The roaring fire makes this a perfect place for a whisky mac after exploring the city's Christmas market or the courtyard is a good place to have a drink on a sunny afternoon.

A great spot during the festivals as it's a little off the beaten track and you can often find a seat. Good for real ales. It's just behind the Scottish Writers' Museum, which is worth a look, and because it's close to Edinburgh University's School of Theology, it's also a regular haunt of academics.
