Easy access to transportation routes, walking area for shopping, dining and entertainment.
Recommended for a FRIDAY (also easier to do on your way to LAX). MALIBU: As for nature hikes in LA, Malibu has the prettiest views and is easily accessible. There are more camping/hiking areas that are great about 2hrs from LA, but I'd stick with what's close to LA and just enjoy yourself more- this is also entirely coastal, so it's really easy to pull over and dip your toes in the water or nap on the sand. Maybe even look into yoga on the pier weekend mornings or joining a session of goat yoga! And after hiking, I'd hit up the Getty Villa on the way back down to LA- the food there is great and it's an incredible landmark/historically significant bc Charles Getty basically had them transport an actual Italian villa to the cliffs in Malibu. It's free to enter but parking is $15 & it’ll be smart to get a reservation to visit in advance. If you plan a day well, you could easily hike early in the morning, hit the Getty Villa for lunch, and cross over and use your same pass to visit the Getty Center (which is about 10 times larger and more diverse). Santa Monica: And Santa Monica Pier/3rd Street Promenade (check to see if they're still doing concerts on the Pier Thursdays while you're in town). Rent a bike and ride along the PCH- it’s cheap and fun and possible all year round! Even if you don't want to shop, on Friday nights, 3rd street is filled with street performers and the entire street is an outdoor mall (no cars!). You’ll find everything from Bloomingdales to street jewelry there! Venice Beach: On the way out, First Fridays of the month on Abbott Kinney are fun, filled with food trucks, and super chill just to walk down the streets as they're lit up. Friends love the grilled cheese truck, and I love that I can get lobster rolls on the go. AMAZING donut shops (and I don't even like donuts, so this is saying something). Blue Star & Sidecar Doughnuts are right beside Mendacino Farms- a great spot for lunch! I always recommend the Kogi food truck because it’s so originally and authentically LA- a Korean Taco truck that melds our two cultures together in a classically LA format of a food truck, and that originated the high-end food truck phenomenon! Their trucks are around (track one down), but if you want to see their brick-and-morter location, ALIBI, it’s right there, around the corner from Abbott Kinney in Marina del Rey! You can continue down from Abbott Kinney to Venice Beach- if you go Sat/Sun morning, you'll see all the classics- street performers, Muscle Beach, etc. (as seen in- literally ANYTHING filmed in LA). Go further down and you'll find the secret Venice Canals- many locals don't even go here, but it's GORGEOUS in the day and super romantic at night. If you have a larger party or kids, C&O Trattoria is famous for it’s garlic knots...truth be told, I can’t recall much about my meal, but the atmosphere and live music and garlic knots are always fun! There are 2 locations, so be sure to go to the Trattoria in Venice Beach and to get reservations for the outdoor patio! I’m not much of a food person, but I LOVE bringing friends to 26 BEACH and often have out of towners request to go back! It’s a fun atmosphere with absolutely gorgeous brunches and burgers you’ve never heard of! A creative menu that makes it great for adventurous eaters that will try a sushi burger or s’mores french toast! Get your reservation for the covered patio area and be sure to take a peek into both bathrooms!
