Walhalla Coach House
The Coach House is a unique 3 bedroom (plus downstairs games room with additional bunk beds), 2 bathroom home suitable for families or small groups of up to 10 people. Featuring polished timber floors, a cosy wood fire, gas heating, BBQ, pool table, and large kitchen, it overlooks Stringer's Creek and has magnificent views of the Walhalla bushland. The property uses tank water with solar power/gas generator. Being off-grid provides a wonderful opportunity to unplug and get away from it all. Please note: the power capacity is not suitable for using a sleep apnea machine. The price listed is a base price for 2 people, with a small fee increase per extra guest. The price does not include linen, but this can easily be arranged. The space The Coach House is a unique property and features beautiful polished timber floors, wooden shutters and a solid wooden front door that has to be seen to be believed. Please note there is a 2 night minimum stay on weekends. The spacious downstairs lounge/games room has a comfy pull-out couch as well as a bunk bed, and there are bookshelves crammed with a plentiful supply of good reads. The room features a pool table and a piano which is ready to play. There are lovely views onto the surrounds and across Stringers Gorge to the tourist railway line. There is a toilet and handbasin adjacent to this room. The fully equipped kitchen and dining room area has views across the valley, plenty of bench and cupboard space, crockery, cutlery, glasses pots and pans, gas fridge, a gas oven/grill/cooktop and a gas heater to take the chill off in Winter. The dining table and 8 chairs provide seating for everybody. There is also a highchair available for toddlers (no tray). A complimentary supply of tea, coffee and sugar is provided for your arrival. The bathroom features a lead light window and a deep bath, perfect for kids or for adults to luxuriate in and enjoy that long soak. There is a separate shower in the bathroom, and a separate toilet off the downstairs lounge for your convenience. Upstairs, the spacious lounge boasts a cosy wood heater that will burn safely all night. Three armchairs and two couches ensure that there is room for everybody to relax. A second dining table and chairs are located at one end of the room. Kids games, puzzles, board games, cards, toys and books ensure that no one gets bored. There is an upstairs bathroom featuring toilet, basin and a shower with a deep base suitable for bathing babies or small children. Of course, you can just sit back with a glass of wine and soak up the atmosphere while gazing into the fire or enjoy the views across Stringers Gorge. Stringers Creek flows through the valley directly below the house and the only noise to disturb the tranquility is that of the rushing creek, the calls of the black cockatoos, kookaburras and lyrebirds, or the whistle of the steam train as it passes by. The large Master bedroom opens on to the lounge. It features a queen size bed, down doona, bedside lamps, a Persian rug, antique furnishings and more stunning bushland views. The second bedroom also opening on to the lounge room and has a double bed with a cosy feather doona, bedside lamps and an antique dressing table. The third bedroom also opens on to the lounge and has one set of bunks with reading lights, wool doonas, and a pull out spare mattress, but there is another bunk downstairs in the games room. There is a cot with linen available for toddlers and this fits comfortably in the Master bedroom. The cot meets Australian safety standards, and for extra peace of mind, there is a built-in stair gate at the top of the stairs. Outdoors There is an outdoor dining table and chairs on a shady lawn with views across Stringer’s Creek. There are also lawn chairs to lounge in and take in the solitude. There is an undercover BBQ on the back porch, and undercover seating. Please note, the property is not fenced. You will have access to the whole house. However, I am just a phone call away and can be contacted if you have any questions or issues. You also have the option of renting the 1 bedroom, 2 person cottage next door, Stringer's Cottage, which is fully self-contained and comes with all linen and the queen bed made up for your arrival. While staying at the Coach House you will experience the serenity of a real bush environment. It is very peaceful and private with the only sounds the birds and the rushing water of Stringer's Creek below. You are 10 minutes walking distance from the pub and about 20 minutes from the rest of the town. Everything is walking distance, and the house sits above the tourist railway line, a 1 minute walk away. There is parking for 3 vehicles in the driveway. Walhalla has just one long main road and we are the first house you will see from the road as you come into town. The pub is a 10 minute walk and then it's a further 10 minutes to the rest of the shops. The gold mine is another 10 minutes on, and you can walk to the top of the town along the road in half an hour, depending on your pace, and return via the walking track that gives a view over the town. This track continues a further 5 kilometres to Thomson River and you can catch the tourist train back if you time it right. History: The Coach House was built between 1968-72, by the former Walhalla and Thomson River Steam Tramway Pty Ltd, (W&TRST) as hostel accommodation for voluntary workers who rebuilt the former railway between Thomson and Walhalla. Guest access You will have access to the whole house. Once booked, you will be given further instructions on how to access the Coach House, as well as instructed on how to turn on the power and how to use the fire place. Pricing Please note, pricing is for 2 people. It is an extra $20 per person per night to a maximum of 10 people, and weekends incur a 2 night minimum stay. There is a slight surcharge on some public holidays. Bedding Bedding is provided: doonas, covers, pillows and underlays, and linen (e.g. sheets and doona covers) are included in the price up to 2 people. Thereafter, it is $10 per person to provide linen and to ensure your bed is made up upon arrival. Other things to note Tea towels and towels are also provided. The property is not fenced. About this space Stringer’s Cottage is a private, romantic getaway in a gorgeous bush setting and features a luxurious queen size bed with all linen and towels provided. The bedroom has windows opening on to a bushland setting, and a fireplace which adds to the romantic ambience. Firewood is provided and the wood burning fire will burn efficiently day and night to keep the cottage cosy in Winter. In Summer, Stringer’s Cottage is a great escape from the heat, in the shady Stringer’s Gully. Leave the screen door closed and enjoy the valley breezes, the smell of eucalyptus and the sound of the creek below. The large bedroom features two comfy armchairs and a wide selection of books and magazines to while away the time. The galley kitchen has fridge, stove, oven and plenty of crockery and cutlery, and there is a small supply of complimentary tea, coffee and milk provided for your arrival. The kitchen counter overlooks Stringer’s Creek and there are barstools so you can sit on and enjoy the view while you dine. The compact bathroom features a shower with instantaneous gas hot water, and a separate indoor toilet and hand basin. The cottage is light and bright with its own porch and outdoor dining space under cover. It's cosy in Winter and cool in Summer. A wooden staircase (35 steps) leads up to the road where you are just a short walk to the village. Parking is next to the Coach House wood shed, and is all on the one level for unloading when you first arrive. If no-one is in the Coach House feel free to use the driveway to walk in and out if that is easier. You have access to the whole cottage and an outdoor garden area and outdoor setting. The property is not fenced. Minimum 2 nights' booking on weekends. For long weekends and public holidays a surcharge may apply. A baby's cot can be provided at no extra cost. The scenic Walhalla Tourist Train runs for part of the year on Wednesdays and weekends, and there are also gold mine tours. There are walking ghost tours on the weekends. You are 10 minutes walking distance from the pub and about another 5 minutes to the rest of the town. Rawson is a 10 minute drive, Erica 20 minutes, Mt St Gwinear 30 minutes away with toboganning and cross-country skiing and Mt Baw Baw 50 minutes drive for skiing. Everything is walking distance, and the cottage sits above the tourist railway line. There is off-road parking for your vehicle next door, beside the wood shed at the Coach House. It is ideal to park and unload here if there is no one staying at the Coach House, but as a courtesy to guests, please use your own staircase down from the road at all other times. You do not require a 4WD though there are lots of local tracks to explore if you do have one. Guest access Cottage and small garden area. The property is not fenced though there is a gate between you and the Coach House. Built in 1890 using 90,000 handmade bricks, Windsor House provides a unique opportunity to stay in one of the last original properties in the gold mining town of Walhalla, Gippsland.
