The "Confectionery Colombo" is one of the main sights at the center of Rio de Janeiro, worth a visit and a good place to have a little lunch during a visit of the city center. The confectionery was founded in 1894. A flamboyant architecture in Art Nouveau style with giant mirrors from Antwerp framed by elegant friezes carved from jacaranda wood. The tabletops are Italian marble and the light fixtures are from France. The makeover of 1913 was inspired by the broader urban renewal that had overtaken Rio de Janeiro around the turn of the century. The confeitaria Colombo became a meeting place for Intellectuals and politicians.

You should eat a shrimp pastelzinho (pastel de camarão) in Bar Urca. The Bar Urca have a privileged view of the city: on the edge of Guanabara Bay, overlooking the Botafogo Bay, and the Corcovado. At the weekends, cariocas like to go there after the beach, to find friends, to have a beer and to see the sunset.

Churrascaria Palace is a more affordable version of the classic churrascaria. It might be cheaper than the others but it does not mean that Churrascaria Palace does not offer the same treats. It is the best way for those on a tight budget to experience the joys of an all-you-can-eat meat buffet. Sushi and seafood are also available, together with fresh salads. For those who plan ahead and register on the website, a discount is available to enjoy skewer after skewer of delicious meat.

Rua Vinícius de Moraes, is where Rio’s most lithe and tanned bodies migrate. For most parts of the year the smell of pot can still be quite strong.

This crazy and colorful tiled stairway is the work of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, self-taught. Having traveled the world, Selarón moved to Rio in 1983, in a tiny house just in front of the desolate stairway connecting the areas of Lapa and Santa Teresa. 215 steps that he entirely covered with majolica collected in urban areas of Rio or donated by visitors from all around the world. Since 1990, Selarón has laid over 2000 tiles, mainly red-colored: unique pieces representing a “tribute to the Brazilian people”.

Since early September cariocas and tourists can now enjoy the new Praça Mauá, the area which underwent four years of works as part of the Porto Maravilha revitalization project. Surrounded by the Rio Art Museum (MAR) and the Museum of Tomorrow , the square becomes a new tourist spot to walk in the City Centre.

Santa Teresa is for me the most charming neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro .The place we chose to live! The Portuguese architecture and art deco houses are very charming. The neighborhood is really nice by day and by night is very lively. Santa Teresa is a colorful place, with great music and full of pubs and restaurants. The atmosphere there is relaxed, no frills but full of carioca soul. From the top of the mountain, you have an incredible view of Rio de Janeiro.

A great program to do on Monday night! Every Monday evening starting at 7PM, the Roda de Samba da Pedro do Sal performs original Carioca sambas in a traditional samba circle in a place that has a deep historical significance. Located in the Saúde neighborhood of Centro near Praça Mauá and the port, the area around Pedra do Sal was where the first African immigrants from Bahia settled in Rio in the early 17th century. It was in the square at Pedra do Sal that the first Carioca samba developed with legendary sambistas. Now it is this music and the historical spirit and significance of the area that the current Roda de Samba da Pedra do Sal look to preserve with their free, weekly events.

The authentic modern mansion was designed in 1948 to serve as the home of Ambassador Walther Moreira Salles and was inaugurated in 1951. It is located in an area with approximately 10.000 square meters in the Atlantic Forest. Always has really cool exhibits. A great ride for those who love architecture.

Shopping

The Saara covers no less than eleven blocks from downtown Rio. A mega cluster of stalls and shops selling everything, you can buy everything there. Also known as the Arab quarter, immigrants have transformed an area that was formerly the port into a huge market with more than 1200 stores. Some stores are official (as of Havaianas), others already sell counterfeit products and specific objects, such as refrigerator magnets , batteries, sunglasses etc. At Carnival, the stores sell all kinds of costumes and accessories to celebrate the big party. The crowded atmosphere is not for everyone, to enjoy the place you should have to like mess.

Parks & Nature

In the midst of the Tijuca Forest, the Cachoeira do Horto Hike is a short but fun hike to enjoy the jungle feeling of Rio de Janeiro. Hiking the Cachoeira do Horto, which means the Horto Waterfall in English, you will see up to three different small waterfalls. The last waterfall is only for advanced hikers but no worries, the hike is perfect also for those who are looking for an easy to moderately difficult hike. This program is also a good option for cloudy days as you don’t depend on the weather for the view. The jungle is always lovely to look at.

Parque Lage is one of my favorite places in Rio de Janeiro. The park offers attractions for the whole family. People like to get together to make pleasant picnics or climb the trails leading to Corcovado Mountain, passing waterfalls and lookouts. In the palace that was built early last century works the School of Visual Arts . The school always organizes cultural events such as music concerts and exhibitions.

The park was created by King João VI and has about eight thousand species of flowers and plants from Brazil and the world. The royal palms, that were planted at the time of the foundation are prominent in the landscape, as well as the rose garden and the pond with water lilies. Among the most visited places are the stove with insectivorous plants and orchid , with over three thousand specimens of 600 species . The park also houses the sensory garden, made especially for people who are visually impaired - there are inscriptions in Braille and selected plants can be touched.
