Food Scene

It’s a local, artisanal coffee spot that is very bright and clean. It’s not a huge space, but it’s one of those friendly upmarket places where everyone is generally on a laptop and working. Every time I’ve been here during the day it's been pretty quiet, nothing too overwhelming. And the owners are never chasing you out of here. The wifi is good and free, there are a decent number of outlets. They also offer free refills on tea, which is nice.

What’s really nice about this space is the garden adjacent to the cafe. On a nice day you can work outside at the tables under the trees in the succulent garden. I go here when I need some more headspace and breathing room and a bit of time to ponder. There’s also nice seating inside and they have a little upstairs area that overlooks the entrance. There are outlets inside but not outside. The wifi is available in the garden, though.

It’s pretty intimate inside—small but really cozy and well laid out with a modern design in marble and black-and-white tile. Because of the close quarters, you can’t help but get into conversations with people—I always do. There’s also some seating out front with decent light and nice views of foliage. Try the great breakfast sandwich. For working, I would say the best time is from around 10 am to 3 pm. The wifi is great and there are outlets available.

The MIll is one of the classic San Francisco spots that everyone needs to check out. It offers good people watching and good bread—there’s a bakery in here—and the Four Barrel coffee they serve is great. The big caveat here is that there’s no wifi, which actually makes it a good place to get work like writing done or to have a meeting. If you really need to focus, I would say go between 10 am to 3 pm. It gets a lot quieter after the morning rush.

This is a nice cafe with good food and wifi, but what I really like about it is that they have this really beautiful back patio. It’s like a secret garden, with a gazebo, metal tables and chairs, and heat lamps. It almost has a Parisian or Mediterranean feel to it. The cafe is attached to a wine bar, so you can transition from work to happy hour.

A little neighborhood cafe that overlooks Duboce Park. There’s outdoor seating, and it’s a beautiful, idyllic street to sit on. It’s right on the Wiggle, which is this zig-zag of streets from Market Street to Divisadero that’s relatively flat, so a lot of cyclists come through. Inside, it’s well-lit and generally quiet, and there’s free wifi.

It’s the cafe that’s closest to Ocean Beach. There’s plenty of seating both inside and out. To close your laptop and walk across the street into the sand to look at the Pacific Ocean and be as far away from your work as possible is a pretty nice thing to be able to do. If you can’t find a spot inside, look for my yellow van by the beach. I have a 1973 VW Bus that I’ve equipped with power and a hotspot, and I often drive down to Ocean Beach and park and just open up my door and work from inside my Bus. So I have my own little coworking space, and there’s room for two more!

The space is pretty big and a bit industrial, but a wall of windows lets a lot of light in. It’s one of those environments where it feels like you’re there to work. The crowd is hammering away at their laptops, and you get into the flow of everyone else's energy. It's a good, high-octane environment without being a coworking space. They have food, so you can stay there all day and recharge on coffee and keep going. There's no reason to leave—at least not until 5pm, when they close. The wifi is fast and free, and there are outlets everywhere.
