Nice German town with historical relevance. An hour away by train. Return ticket is around €5. You can get it from one of the machines in the station.

Trier is the oldest city of Germany, as it hosted Roman Emperors as Constantin. It is a lively small city, with many options for eating out and shopping. I love walking in the city center and feel the atmosphere.

It is worthwhile to drive by car or train for a day to Trier. The roman history is still present there. To my mind the Porta Nigra, the Basilica, and the Roman German Museum are a must to see. The pedastrian area of the center in Trier is always interesting to investigate, especially during the summer months, when a lot of artists show what they are able to do. It is also possible to take the bike (or e-bike) from Gerolstein via the beautiful Kyll Radweg, to spend the rest of the day in Trier, and to return to Gerolstein by train.

UNESCO World Heritage In 1986 the Porta Nigra, the Amphitheater, the Kaiserthermen, the Barbarathermen, the Römerbrücke and the Konstantin-Basilika were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, together with the Dom and Liebfrauen churches and the Igeler Säule a little way outside Trier.
