Food Scene

Great Yorkshire fish and chips. Nice tables and friendly atmosphere. You can't beat cod and chips and mushy peas with a pot of tea when you are in Scarborough. My children who mostly live in London come back especially to go to the Golden Grid! For something different try their dressed crab salad. For booking: Tel: 01723 360922 Tip - Ask for an upstairs table with a view of the harbour - you might get lucky.

On the sea front you will find a Pizza Express and an Ask Restaurant but when Chris and I are looking for a good pizza or a tasty steak or great jumbo scampi we go to Anton's cafe bar. We even nip in for a great coffee or a glass of wine if we are not eating. Informal and modern, it's all about good food and easy conversation. Located in an old chapel on the picturesque Sandside you might need to book as they are sometimes busy, quite rightly so! Tel 01723 381445. Tip - ask for a table upstairs with a view - you might just get lucky.

This is a small but very interesting geology museum. Opened in 1829, this unique circular building is one of the world's first purpose-built museums. The design of the building was suggested by William Smith, known as the father of English Geology. Full of fascinating objects, the Rotunda Museum is home to a unique Bronze Age man and the skeleton of a Plesiosaur found on the Yorkshire Coast. The building is an exhibit in itself - the interior, with its stunning trompe I'oeil ceiling and fascinating gallery, featuring a frieze showing the geology of the local coastline designed by Smith's nephew, John Phillips, is remarkable. We love the Stephen Joseph Theatre as it has something suitable for all ages. It has some especially good shorts children's theatre through the summer. My grandson (5 yrs) and I have just been to see The Just So Stories, a fun, up to date, short play about how the animals became what they are. Very funny and imaginative and the kids get to do there bit if they want to! This and other children's plays run through throughout the year. For grown ups there are the famous Alan Ayckbourn plays and the National Theater streaming events where you can see a production live from many of the London theaters. There is also a great programme of films running throughout the year. Panto of course is such fun at Xmas! To look at all the events and to book visit: https://www.sjt.uk.com

If you like jazz you will love this great event. Happening 23-25 Sept 2016 at the Scarborough Spa Complex on the sea front in Scarborough UK. A wonderful venue for rousing big bands, superb vocalists, rhythmic variations, swinging modern jazz and something different. Buy tickets for the whole event or just parts of it. There are also great fringe events happening at the same time. Why not stay at our home from home Airbnb while you luxuriate in the music you love. Contact Scarborough Spa Theatre for more details of the event and programme.

Harwood Dale Forest is just on our doorstep as is the North York Moors National Park. Too many stunning walks to mention but we have guide books which our guests can borrow. Suffice to say that people liken it to the Black Forest in Germany - simply beautiful in all seasons. Tip - You need a good map and the right clothes for the weather. We have guide books you can borrow.

If you are a walker we highly recommend that you walk down our drive and into the village and turn up the coastal path and walk left to the coast. The walk along our bit of the coast to Hayburn Wyke and beyond (all the way to Whitby) is stunning on a good day! You can also turn right instead, once you hit the coast and walk into Scarborough which is also lovely. It is a truly beautiful and rugged coast. Tip - You need your walking boots and check the weather with us before you start and use our local knowledge. we have guide books you can borrow.

If you want a town park with activities for the family, you might like Peasholm Park. It is an oriental themed municipal park located just 10 minutes drive from us. It opened in 1912 and became a favourite venue for galas, displays and exhibitions. It still has a lovely lake where you can take family boat rides and much of the original planting is still in evidence with lots of ornamental trees. Feed the ducks and treat yourself to an ice cream. Just across the road is the miniature railway which is a real treat for everyone! Open 10am - 5pm in the summer. Check with us if you're not sure. Tip - take a ride in a dragon boat - it's fun!

Two minutes away from the bottom of our drive is the old railway track running from Scarborough to Whitby. This is now a hugely successful walking, jogging and biking trail. You can be adventurous and do the whole of it or just take a stroll or a ride to the first railway station coffee and cake outpost. Once passed Ravenscar the track runs alongside the coast with panoramic sea views all the way to Whitby. Great for families as there are no roads to worry about!

Everything Else

We love Castle Howard which is one of Britain's finest houses & gardens. It is a magnificent 18th century residence set within 1,000 acres of breathtaking landscape in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the heart of North Yorkshire. From our house it takes approx 45 minutes and it is a great place for lunch or even just tea and cakes. There is something to see in the vast grounds and gardens all year round, don't forget to walk around the walled gardens and see the herbaceous borders. Visiting the house will take you back in time and might remind you of the British TV series Brideshead Revisited, which was filmed there. Opening times 10am - 5pm during the summer months.
