Parks & Nature

Semsvannet, close to the residence of the Norwegian Crownprince family, is a beautiful lake near Asker town. There is a fine walk/jog from the car park round the lake to Tveiter farm. Enjoy the wild life, song birds, owls and woodpeckers, the rich flora, watch rising fish in the lake, and enjoy the pastures where there are cows, horses and sheep. At Tveiter you can admire the finest waterfall in Asker - if there's not too much water, you can even walk in behind the waterfall! If you are more adventurous, you might want to try the more strenuous hike up to the top of the overlooking Skaugumåsen (the Skaugum hill). From the top on a fine day the view of the Oslo fjord is incredibly beautiful.

Vardåsen is our local slalom hill. Although this is a fun slope in winter, it is at least as popular during other seasons, as the view of the countryside and Oslo fjord is spectacular once you've climbed to the top. There are marked trails. Do remember to bring a picnic and water bottles to refresh you before the descent. You may like to record your climb in the tourist book found at the top most point on the hill. If you drive round Heggedalsveien from Heggedal village, especially at weekends or on fine evenings, you will often see rock climbers making their way up the steep side of Vardåsen hill. If this is your sport, you might like to try yourself?

The closest petrol/diesel station is Circle K, at Slemmestad which is 3.2 km from Vollen. You can also buy basic supplies, such as milk, on Sundays as the shop is open from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. However be aware that supplies bought at fuel stations in Norway are generally much more expensive than if bought in grocery shops or supermarkets.

Ferry between Vollen and Oslo

Early birds can take the ferry which leaves from Vollen to Oslo several times in the morning - latest departure is 08.23. The afternoon ferries leave the capital city at Aker Brygge 3 times from 15:10 to 17:30. It is wonderful to enjoy the fast 25 minute trip along the fjord. The ferry operates most of the year on weekdays only, but in summer there are trips at the weekends. See the timetable in SheepsInn apartment.
The coastal paths at Vollen are really beautiful. Wander in forests, by small lakes, beaches, fjord views! In warm weather, you the could enjoy a swim.

Just 3 minutes down the hill from the apartment, it's always fun to wander around the village, discovering the various shops and workshops. Most are open all week, including Sunday, but some close on Mondays. You will decide yourself which you enjoy most, but just to mention my own favourites: Rhomb has lots of beautiful gift articles for sale but visit this shop just to enjoy the amazing view inside. Galleri LGD is both salesroom and workshop for international prize winning jewelry designer, LIIsa Gude Deberitz. And don't miss the Ceramics Corner for wonderful articles. For ladies' quality fashion, enjoy a browse round Herligheten in our little village square.

Shopping

Even in summer you'll find everything you want for a Norwegian Christmas. And you can post your cards home with an official Santa's Elf stamp. If driving there, be aware that there is a genuine (and Norway's only) traffic sign telling motorists to take care as Santa may be crossing the road!! The shop is right in the centre of the charming village of Drøbak. You can drive there from Vollen, by taking Slemmestadveien south and then the 7 km long tunnel which goes under the Oslo fjord. You might like to combine your visit to Drøbak with a 10 minute ferry boat ride out to Oscarsborg Fortress on an island mid-fjord, very famous because the first invading war-ship, Blücher, from Germany was sunk there in 1940.

Sightseeing

For a truly amazing experience a little off the tourist beaten-track, we recommend spending some hours on Oscarsborg island. You can drive there from Vollen, by taking the road Slemmestadveien south and then the 7 km long tunnel which goes under the Oslo fjord to Drøbak town. You then take a 10 minute ferry boat ride out to Oscarsborg Fortress on an island mid-fjord, very famous because the first invading German war-ship, Blücher, was sunk there in 1940. There are lots of paths round the island so you can examine canons and look at the fortress, or relax on the beach and swim in the fjord. In summer, there is a good restaurant and a shop selling ice-cream and snacks but the best is do as Norwegians do and bring a picnic.

Food scene

Really tasty, reasonably priced Greek dishes. You can enjoy a cup of great coffee, a glass of wine or a hot or cold lunch and gorgeous cakes. You'll find lots of Greek articles and food for sale too. Either eat at the little restaurant, just opposite REMA, or take home with you.

The Italian food is great, the staff very friendly and you can sit indoors or out according to the weather. You will enjoy watching the boats on the Oslo fjord and in and around the marina. While there, do walk out on the pier to admire the boats, consider hiring a scooter or taking a swim and sauna!!
