At 45,000 square foot, new Italian market Mercato Metropolitano has no shortage of artisanal talent. Housed in a disused paper factory, it brings together bakers, fishmongers, charcuterie specialists, coffee roasters, brewers, pizza chefs and more to showcase their wares, serving up dishes from individual stalls. Diners can gather together on large communal tables to feast on authentic dishes while live musical performances, educational activities, an in-house cinema and cultural exhibitions add to the draw. There's also a 4,000 square foot Italian supermarket, a barber shop, a boxing gym and a co-working space.

Drinks & Nightlife

Right across the street from the Houses of Parliament, the Red Lion is perfectly positioned for politicos to pop in for a pint after a heated debate. Equally, it appeals to tourists taking in the sights of Westminster and Big Ben and, at around 100 metres from Downing Street, it's also the Prime Minister's local. But despite its furiously busy location - between the Cenotaph and Big Ben - the Red Lion manages to retain all the trappings of a traditional pub including wood-panelled walls, stained glass windows and strong ales. On a hot summer's day you can take your drink outside - into the back garden or the front of the pub. 'A Great British Tradition' is the wording around the pub's walls

Arts & Culture

Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery has been built to bring his collection of over 2,000 artworks out of storage and on display to the public. Taking up the whole length of the Vauxhall street, the gallery - a combination of three listed buildings flanked by new buildings at either end - was designed by Caruso St John, the archtects behind the £45m masterplan for Tate Britain's 2013 facelift.
