Just a 5 minute walk from the house along the high street Homebird is a great spot for breakfast (and lunch and coffee!). We love their avocado and poached egg breakfast and their cherry scones. Though, as all their ingredients are locally sourced and everything made fresh on site, you can't go too far wrong with whatever you choose! This place gets really busy for breakfast so go early to avoid queuing onto the street for a table!

This is our FAVORITE restaurant not only in Holywood, not only in Belfast but in the whole of Northern Ireland! The food is exquisite and the surroundings intimate. We go here for birthdays and special occasions. This is a high-end restaurant so it's perfect if you want to treat yourself while on vacation. The owner, Saul, loves to chat to his customers and he will talk to you about the menu and how each of the dishes are made. You need to book in advance as its a tiny restaurant and really popular but absolutely worth it!

Our favourite spot for coffee or lunch in Holywood. Just round the corner from the house, this cafe-come-art gallery is a great place to relax surrounded by beautiful art. The atmosphere is very relaxing with cosy seats upstairs by the fire and private booths and tables downstairs. We go at all times of the day but our favourite time to go is first thing in the morning for breakfast. We sit by the fire upstairs in comfy seats and enjoy homemade pancakes or porridge. We always have a browse in the gallery and shop downstairs on our way out.

Boojum does the best burritos around! If you like Mexican food make sure you go. There are 4 Boojums in the city and they all offer casual dining. You order your burrito at the counter and move along like in a conveyor belt adding ingredients. The food is fresh, homemade and delicious. Great "street food" at a great price.

The Dirty Duck is just on the edge of Holywood overlooking Belfast Lough. A nice bar offering good pub grub. Make sure you sit upstairs to get a view of the Lough while eating your lunch or dinner. We like it on a sunny day because you can sit outside enjoying the view with a drink and some good food.

A great family pizzeria. We go here a lot with our son and family friends. There is a kids climbing frame out back of the restaurant so children can play while waiting for their food. This means the adults get to chat in peace :-) The pizzas are thin and authentic like you'd get in Italy and reasonably priced. You can't book so our advice would be to go early in the evening before the queue gets too long as you can sometimes have a wait for a table. They also do takeaways.

A lovely family restaurant in Holywood with a children's menu. The portion sizes are very generous (you get a "good feed" as we say in Belfast!) and the menu is extensive. Not too expensive and not too fancy but always satisfying. Our family always go there for family birthdays as it suits the kids and adults alike.

Skinners Bakery, on the High Street, serves fresh local bread every day including Potato bread, Soda bread and Wheaten Farls, all of which can only be found in Northern Ireland! All of these breads are great fried or toasted for breakfast. We would really recommend trying some!! Skinners also has a small cafe that serves an Ulster Fry for breakfast each morning. This is a traditional Northern Irish breakfast so a must for visitors!

The Dock Cafe is in Belfast docklands, right beside where the Titanic set sail. It is run by volunteers and doesn't charge but has an Honesty Box instead. It has lots of local artwork and a collection of memorabilia from the Titanic. You might even be lucky enough to eat your lunch at a table from the drawing room of the Titanic! We love this quirky little cafe and it's definitely worth a visit if you are visiting the Titanic museum.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Maypole Bar is called "Neds" by the locals. With a sign inside that says "in the name of drinking and good conversation, mobile phones should be used outside" this pub is all about the craic and the Guinness! Old and unchanged for many years, it is always filled with regulars and welcoming to anyone who wants to try a pint of the black stuff the way its meant to be enjoyed. Personally I think its the best Guinness in the north of Ireland! Maeve and I love to go for a drink there before dinner at the weekends.

This is a good bar for watching live sport or listening to a live bands at the weekend, They often have meal deals on for families so keep an eye out for that if you go. Off Holywood High Street, it's only a few minutes walk from the house.

Parks & Nature

Walk up through Redburn Country Park for fantastic views of Belfast, Belfast Lough and Cavehill. Only a 5-10 minute drive/taxi ride from the house (you can also walk in about 15-20 minutes), this is a great walk on a clear sunny day. There are several paths to the top, some easy and some steep so it's manageable for anyone with normal fitness. Some of the paths overlook parts of Holywood Golf Club, home Golf Club of Rory McIlroy. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to the top for the best views.

The Crumlin Road Gaol (jail) is one of the most interesting buildings in Belfast to visit. The prison was open from 1845 to 1996. It housed republican and loyalist political prisoners during the Troubles, as well as non-political men, women and children. There are a number of tours you can take which explain the political and social history of the prison. There is also a great ghost tour! The jail is a must see for those interested in the history of Belfast. You can check out and book the different tours online at https://crumlinroadgaol.com/gaol-tours/ or by calling the jail on +44 28 90 741 500.

W5 is an interactive Science park for kids. You can spend hours here using and playing with so many fascinating displays, not to mention the interactive play area. It also has a small coffee dock for refreshments. Definitely a great place to take kids. Take the train from Holywood to Titanic (one stop on the Belfast train).

Arts & Culture

The Ulster museum is a lovely modern building (recently rebuilt) which contains local Irish history as well as natural, Egyptian and prehistoric artefacts. It has a lovely cafe, a children's art room and interactive displays for kids, so it's great for families. It's a good way to spend a rainy afternoon. We often take our son and our niece and nephew and the children never tire of it. The museum is situated in Botanic Gardens. These are beautiful gardens with 2 green houses you can walk around and a children's play park. Both the museum and park are free! Take the train from Holywood to Belfast and get off at Botanic Avenue. The park/museum are a 5-10 minute walk from the train.
