Parks & Nature

During the late 1980s, Timothy John Byford campaigned for Banjica forest to have special protection because of the large number of nightingales and other species of birds that nest in it. The wood is now an officially protected natural habitat and has been dubbed by some (unofficially) as "Byford's Forest". The main forest path (going along the length of the forest) has a form of a functional trim trail, while the smaller paths are left in their natural state. Some old trees were cut and timber was cut in smaller pieces and left at the spot, attracting insects and insect-eating birds. Benches and wooden wastebaskets are placed periodically along the trim trail, while there are also several well-spaced spots with information tables and multiple benches under wooden roofs, intended for rest of several families. There are a wooden and a stone-based bridge over the widest parts of the stream, as well as several plank bridges over the narrowest parts. Bird houses are placed all over the forest.

Košutnjak is one of the most popular recreational places in Belgrade. Sports Center Košutnjak is one of the largest and most diverse in the city (stadiums, pools, etc.), while the park also has an auto-camp, modern settlements of Filmski Grad and Pionirski Grad, big studios of the national broadcaster Radio Television of Serbia, many popular restaurants and arranged paths criss-crossing the forest. In the lower parts, Košutnjak and Topčider forests grew together, while in the upper parts they are divided by the river Topčiderska reka and a railway passing through the river's valley (both Košutnjak and Topčider have their own, separate train stations).

Kalemegdan Park is the largest park and the most important historical monument in Belgrade. Its name is formed from the two Turkish words: "Kale" (meaning "fortress") and archaic word of Turkish origin "megdan" (meaning "battlefield"). It provides places of rest and entertainment. Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park together represent a cultural monument of exceptional importance, the area where various sport, cultural and arts events take place, for all generations of Belgraders and numerous visitors of the city. Besides many kilometers of paths and numerous hideouts through the park, there’s also a few playgrounds for the kids, some chess boards from the elderly, and a great wall which is a favorite spot for teens & youth with spectacular and often romantic views of sunsets, storms or other beauties of nature. In winter, the younger population goes skiing and sleigh riding on the slopes near the Zoo, or ice-skating at the court near the Sahat (Clock) tower. The park is also home to squirrels and other smaller animals which from time to time like to hang around with people, specially if you have some food to offer them. If you don’t like walking, you can also get the mini train that runs through the park. Kalemegdan Park, split in two as the Large and Little Parks, was developed in the area that once was the town field. The Little and Large Kalemegdan Park are as follows: Mali Kalemegdanski park (Мали Калемегдански парк or "Little Kalemegdan Park") occupies the area in the eastern section, which borders the urban section of Belgrade. Northern section of Little Kalemegdan Park is occupied by the Belgrade Zoo, opened in 1936. The art pavilion Cvijeta Zuzorić is also located here. Veliki Kalemegdanski Park (Велики Калемегдански парк or "Large Kalemegdan Park") occupies the southern corner of the fortress, with geometrical promenades, a military museum, a museum of forestry and hunting, and the Monument of Gratitude to France. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kalemegdan/@44.8242528,20.4505255,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x475a6549076b5057:0x4699d160114f455e!8m2!3d44.8242528!4d20.4527142

The very heart of nightlife in Belgrade. Belgrade’s Savamala district is Serbia’s new creative hub! Find out how artists turned a Belgrade district from wasteland to wonderland. Creativity is blossoming in Belgrade where a riverside cultural hub has sprung up in the derelict mansions and warehouses, led by free thinkers looking to the city’s future.

Great concept with multi arts happenings. My favorite cocktails there are - Caipirinha and Mai Tai! Mikser House presents a new concept of the cultural institution, which connects cultural, educational, and commercial activities in a multifunctional space originating in the creative transformation of an old city warehouse. Today, at the site of the former industrial garage in Savamala, now one of the most promising Belgrade neighborhoods, Mikser House contributes to the new transformations of this part of the city, turning it into a cultural district.

Jazz Basta comes as a highly recommended place to spend summer evenings enjoying good music in a location that boasts the best of both worlds – very central, but also nicely hidden away from the masses. Tucked away in a quiet residential area right beside Brankov Bridge, Jazz Basta is a fantastic little hideout for music fans and café-lovers alike. The location of the café is quite fantastic. When heading down the steps from the higher ground of Belgrade city centre around Kosancicev Venac and the popular Savamala neighbourhood located under Brankov Bridge, you will find this quaint café right off the steps on your right-hand side. The musical guests vary and don’t stick too strictly to the genre, unlike most jazz clubs in Belgrade. Sometimes it might be a traditional small jazz band, but other times it could be a trio of acoustic guitars and a violinist.

Sightseeing

Although Belgrade is mostly surrounded with plains, mountain Avala makes an exception. Avala, which lies only 20 minutes by public transport from our apartment, south from the city, is definitely favorite relaxing spot for many Belgradians. It is place of historical and cultural significance. Mountain becomes "alive" especially during spring and fall time, when picnic in shades of the forest represents favorite activity of visitors. Along the road towards the Avala peak, on the left side lies historical sight - monument dedicated to Russian war veterans who died in an airline accident in 1964. At the very top of the mountain, you will find Monument to the Unknown Hero. It is one of the most notable sights of Avala. Monument, dedicated to victims of the WWI, was built on a place where used to stand fortress Žrnovo. King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia gave an order to destroy ruins of this former Roman settlement and build the monument in 1934. While touring Avala, eventually you will get to the pride of Belgrade, Avala Tower. Tower is symbol of Belgrade and with 205 meters, it is the highest structure in Serbia. It was destroyed during NATO bombing in 1999, but later rebuilt and officially opened in April 2010, marking 11th anniversary of bombing of Serbia. Avala Tower has observation deck from which you can see most of the Belgrade surrounding. Visit www.avalskitoranj.rs to see panorama from Avala Tower (inside and outside). How to reach the Avala Tower The top of Avala you can reach by car, but there are some buses that can take you to the Avala as well. You can go to the top by the bus number 400. To the top is 20 minute ride. Bus with number 400 starts it’s season first of May. To the base of the mountain you can get by buses with numbers 401, 403, 405, 407 and 408. All the buses you can catch from the bus stop near our apartment. Typically every summer there is route „From citys hart to the Avala“ (’Iz srca grada do Avale“). It is open top double decker „Lasta“ bus that drives you to the top of Avala and it starts it’s route at „Nikola Pašić square” (Trg Nikole Pašića“).

The old bohemian quarter of Belgrade dates back to late 19th and early 20th century. It was back then when its kafane (taverns and restaurants) were a meeting place for many of the greatest figures of the cultural scene of the period. It is often compared with the Montmartre in Paris, both for its appearance and the cheerful, vigorous artists' atmosphere, bringing along the bohemian lifestyle and spirit. Skadarlija and the surrounding streets were home to 14 cafe-restaurants at the end of 19th century, a fact advertised in the Guide through Belgrade in 1909, when the population of the Serbian capital was just 90,000. Skadarlija recently offered its hospitality to world famous people who enjoyed the summer scent of the linden tree in bloom, freshly watered cobblestones, selected dishes of Serbian cuisine and the greatest specialty of Serbia: the atmosphere. The significant cafe-restaurants of Skadarlija, such as Tri šešira, Dva jelena, Dva bela goluba, Velika Skadarlija, Zlatni bokal, Ima dana and Šešir moj, are worthy successors of the former Skadarlija.

Belgrade Fortress is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade. For centuries the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, and thus the history of the fortress, until most recent times, equals the history of Belgrade itself. The first mention of the city is when it was founded in the 3rd century BC as "Singidunum" by the Celtics! The Serbs finally settled in the Belgrade area as well as the regions west and south of Belgrade in the beginning of the 7th century. Layers of history, literally, one over another. The views of Sava and Danube confluence are just iconic, and suche you will rarely see anywhere in the world. The rest to discover, I leave up to you!
