About the Caribbean food, if you are not planning to visit the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, there is a restaurant when you will find the authentic and most delicious dishes, the place is called Restaurante La Caribeña and its located 800mts west from downtown, on the way to the volcano. They have a lot of great dishes, mostly seafood but my favorite is the rice and beans with chicken and caribbean sauce and since I love spicy food, I ask them for their home-made chilli sauce with panamanian hot pepper, the combination is sooooo good!!!

Lava Lounge is a great place, good atmosphere, normally life music couple days of the week, good sangrias delicious food, Caribbean style. Super Rosvil> Located around 2 blocks away from downtown. This supermarket probably is the only one where you will have the chance to find more imported products and maybe a bit more of quality on the products (since we are in a rural area, we don’t have a fancy or big supermarket with a big selection of products. So basically, this one is the best place that you would find around La Fortuna). It is open from 7am to 10pm from Monday to Sunday.

Specifically Monday and Friday, Salon Las Espuelas turns into a vegetable/fruit shop (Monday only organic products). There are several other shops and supermarkets where you can buy those products during the rest of the week but if you are in La Fortuna one of this days, i recommend you to visit this place because the product is super fresh, its super cheap and you would help a lot to the small local farmers.

Sightseeing

Sloth's Territory is a total trail of 1300 meters, which extends along the natural forest surrounded La Havana River. This beautiful place is located just steps away from this villa and it is open from 8am to 4pm. During the hike, the trail allows you to enjoy a gallery forest with lush vegetation and giant trees as Chilamate and Guácimo Colorado; constituting the habitat of many species like: opossums, two and tree-toed sloths and many birds such as toucans, tanagers and others. But the main attraction is the sloth watching. The Rodriguez Family, a traditional Costar Rican family, will be your guides, since trying to find sloths require high skills because they use to have an excellent camouflage that make them imperceptible, for not trained eyes. The trail is accessible for all ages, so this is an activity where the whole family can enjoy it. The duration of this activity can be from 30 minutes to 2 hours, all depends if you want to focus just on the sloths or if you are interest of watching more plants and animals. The entrance fee for this activity is US$28 per person, children from 6 to 12 years US$17, younger than 5 are free. (this is a guided hike since it use to be very difficult to find sloths by your own, because of its camouflage).

The ecological reserve additionally has another path of about 350 meters of natural regeneration that culminates in a tree nursery. First impressions of La Fortuna may be somewhat lacking, what with all the tourists and uninspired cinder-block architecture. But, with time, this town’s charms are revealed. Here, horses graze in unimproved lots, spiny iguanas scramble through brush, sloth eyes peer from the riverside canopy, and eternal spring mornings carry just a kiss of humidity on their breath. And always, there’s that massive volcano lurking behind the clouds or sparkling in the sun. For most of its history, La Fortuna has been a sleepy agricultural town, 6km from the base of Cerro Arenal (Arenal Hill). In 1968, Arenal erupted violently after nearly 400 years of dormancy, and buried the small villages of Pueblo Nuevo, San Luís and Tabacón. Suddenly, tourists from around the world started descending on La Fortuna in search of fiery night skies and that inevitable blurry photo of creeping lava. La Fortuna is still one of the top destinations for travelers in Costa Rica, even though the great mountain stopped spewing its molten discharge in 2010. (Lonely Planet)

The swimming hole – otherwise known as “El Salto” – is located just outside the downtown core of La Fortuna. It takes only a few minutes to get to by taxi so the cost is inexpensive. The swimming hole is at a little clearing in a river (a clean river!) at the base of a small waterfall. It can be found under a bridge along the road from La Fortuna to San Ramon (upon exiting downtown La Fortuna, the route towards the La Fortuna waterfall). Driving on this road about 2-3 minutes from downtown La Fortuna you will pass the road (on your right) to the entrance to the La Fortuna Waterfall. Continue past this road (to not turn to the right) and about 50 meters after you will meet the small bridge. Stop at the bridge and climb down the left side (a bit rocky, but not a difficult climb – total climb time is about 30 seconds) to arrive at the swimming hole. There are large rocks you can sit out on if you prefer not to swim, and there is a tarzan swing if you are daring enough to jump! Note: as you are driving on the road towards the bridge, if you pass the tour operating company “Arenal Mundo Aventura” on your right, you have gone too far.

The Fortuna River Waterfall is a natural area managed sustainably by Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), a non-profit organization founded since August 31, 1969, having as its main objective to ensure the well-being and growth of La Fortuna community, through the work execution of road infrastructure, environment, education, promotion of sport and culture, community beautification and strengthening of public safety; projects that are possible to run thanks to funds raised by the visit of each tourist to this natural space. The Fortuna River waterfall is located in a biological reserve with an area of 210 acres of transition premontane tropical wet forest, part of the Arenal Volcano National Park and is located at 520 meters over the sea level, where there are sources of our mountains and the waters of the Fortuna River. Within this sector is the Cerro de los Perdidos, Placas de Mayo and Cerro Chato, which are based on rocky foundations of great geological value, causing in turn a lush and scenic beauty. To observe this splendid 70 meters high waterfall, visitors must pass a path of approximately 530 steps, which offers greater security to its passage and comfortable areas for rest and hydration through a forest with native trees of the area. Once in front of the waterfall, you will find a spacious and comfortable vantage point from which you can freeze your memories using unique and previously unpublished photographs, and finally take a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the Fortuna River, with an only witness (the River Fortune waterfall).

If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Under the Mistico Park brand, today the Park not only offers the hanging bridges experience, but also a wide variety of tours for visitors of all backgrounds, where they can have direct contact with nature housing several native species in an ecosystem full of biodiversity. Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park houses the coming together of several different ecosystems that create a transition vegetation strip with high biodiversity. It is located between the edges of two types of forest, highland and lowland, and integrates both of them. Throughout years of evolution, the rainforest lowland flora, representative of Sarapiquí y Tortuguero, migrated upwards and reached a height of 500-600 m, where it encountered and interacted with highland flora. Therefore, Mistico Park treetops provide the perfect environment for a high diversity of epiphytes, birds, mammals, butterflies, and more. Watch all of them closely from the hanging bridges.

For me, offers the most beautiful waterfalls in the area. It is located about 1 hour and a half away from La Fortuna and the area offers great hikes. The first one is to visit Del Toro Waterfall (it opens from Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 5pm, the entrance fee is about $10), it is not a easy hike if you want to get to the base of the waterfall but for sure, the effort worth it. The second option is the hike to Rio Agrio Waterfall, less than 1 km away from Del Toro Waterfall, and it is much easier walk if you don’t use to walk that much, in the internet you can search for more information, but clicking the links that I sent you, you will have an idea about how to get there and additional details.
