Sightseeing

Crater Lake National Park is Oregon's only National Park. It's a little over 2 hour drive from the Westfir River Cottage. An Oregon vacation isn't complete without a stop at Crater Lake! From NPS: "Crater Lake inspires awe. Native Americans witnessed its formation 7,700 years ago, when a violent eruption triggered the collapse of a tall peak. Scientists marvel at its purity—fed by rain and snow, it’s the deepest lake in the USA and one of the most pristine on Earth. Artists, photographers, and sightseers gaze in wonder at its blue water and stunning setting atop the Cascade Mountain Range."

Food scene

The Campfire is a local favorite serving a Tex-Mex menu. The breakfast menu is my favorite! Check their Facebook page for specials, if you can catch them on "Lee's night" you are in for a treat.

Locally known as simple "the pub", the Three Legged Crane is a traditional pub serving wonderful local beer and good pub treats. I love the fish and chips. Their veggie burger is also very good.

Salt Creek Falls is the second tallest waterfall in Oregon. It was easily accessed from HWY 58 near Willamette Pass. A short walk from the parking lot there is a viewpoint offers beautiful views. There are several hikes near the falls that are good for families. From NFS website: Salt Creek Falls is Oregon's second highest single drop waterfall, cascading 286 feet (87m). The observation platform at the top of the waterfall is 50 yards (45.720 m) from the parking lot. The platform is wheelchair accessible with railings that accommodate wheelchair sight-lines. A steep trail from the platform to the waterfall's base is short, but is not wheelchair accessible due to numerous stairs. A loop gravel trail (Salt Creek Falls Trail #3673) with interpretive signage offers a short hike with multiple vantage points along the canyon rim. Salt Creek Falls Observation Site is normally closed in winter. To access the viewpoint, you can park at the Salt Creek Sno-Park and walk 0.4 miles along the road to the falls."

Waldo Lake is a hidden paradise! A local favorite during the summer to cool down and unwind. Waldo Lake is the headwaters for the river that flows by the cottage. If you go, PACK YOUR BUG SPRAY! There are a lot of mosquitoes! From the NFS website "Thick forests, hiking, mountain biking, camping, swimming and boating. Waldo Lake is a recreation gem of the Cascades (besides the hordes of mosquitoes in early summer). Waldo Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Oregon. Lying high on the western slopes of the Oregon Cascades, Waldo Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Oregon and one of the purest lakes in the world. It has no permanent inlet to bring nutrients into the lake for plant growth. The lack of plant life contributes to its purity. You can see to depths of 120 feet on a calm day. It offers a uniquely peaceful setting on the water and along remote shorelines, surrounded by forests of Douglas fir and Western Hemlock. Recreation in the area is abundant with the lake an ideal location for water activities like sailing, canoeing and swimming. See more photos."

Gold Lake is my favorite sno-park to snowshoe from. It's a local favorite and good for beginners. Remember to buy your sno park pass before you leave, there is no way to buy it in the parking lot. We try to leave the cottage by 8:30 to get a good parking spot. From the NFS website: "Gold Lake Sno-park, located at milepost 61.5 on Oregon Highway 58, is the highest in elevation of all three Willamette Pass area Sno-parks and offers a small network of loop trails with easy access to two three-sided ski shelters (Westview and Bechtel) with wood stoves and sleeping lofts."

Fuji Mountain is my favorite hike in the area. A moderate 3 mile out and back trail that offers beautiful views. I think the description from All Trails does a good job describing the hike: "Discover this 3.1-mile out-and-back trail near Oakridge, Oregon. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 40 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and trail running, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring."

The Westfir Office Bridge is a must see.

Just up the road (east) is the Westifr Office Bridge, the longest covered bridge in Oregon. It was built to connect the mill to the office (the lodge at the corner). The Mill was destroyed by a fire but the beautiful Office Bridge remains. If you time it right, you can see a train going over the nearby railroad bridge.
