Sometimes referred to as a little Venice, Bourton on the Water is not only a very pretty village, it’s home to a small motor museum with lots of other memorabilia, Bird Land and a model village. The River Windrush which runs through the centre of the village, is shallow, and on a hot day is perfect for paddling and a picnic

Another pretty Cotswold village. At Christmas time, as the light fades and the Christmas lights twinkle, you could be forgiven for imagining you have been transported back to Victorian times. Broadway Tower is a strenuous mile or so walk uphill from the village but on a clear day you will be rewarded with fantastic views of up to 5 counties.

Situated in Winchcombe, Sudeley castle has history dating back to Henry VIII, indeed Catherine Parr spent her final days here. Excellent display of artefacts including mannequins of Henry VIII and his six wives. Late Autumn the castle puts on a themed light show which is magical and worthy of a visit if you can get tickets.

Another beautiful Cotswold village where you feel you have stepped back in time. The Old Mill museum where time stands still adds to this feeling. If little ones are travelling with you, a visit to Cotswold Farm Park which is close by, is worth a visit. A rare breeds petting farm will keep them entertained for hours. There’s also a play area to further help exhaust them!

This is an interesting National Trust museum in Snowshill just a couple of miles from Broadway. It has a very eclectic mix of exhibits including Samurai warriors! The Snowshill Arms the local pub situated in the centre of this pretty village is also worth a visit.

Food scene

One of my favourite pubs. Log fires and a cosy atmosphere - perfect on a cold winters evening. The foods really good too! There’s a shop on site too (open 9am to 6pm I believe) selling both food necessities and more indulgent gifts. Oh and look out for the carved mice on the mantle piece - the first one you can see though is on the lytch gate from the car park! GL53 9NW. 01242 870271.

This is a nice pub. It looks old although it was built in the last 10 years. Downside is it’s on the edge of an industrial estate not in the lovely rural setting it befits but don’t let that put you off - once inside you’ll think you’re in an olde English village. The foods very good too. GL4 3HR 01452 634360. It’s only 3 miles from Rivendell Annex.

The Cheeseroller pub is roughly half a mile from Rivendell annex so within walking distance. Do take care though as you need to cross the busy A46. That said there is a traffic light crossing close by it. Since ‘lock down’ it has changed hands and I have yet to visit it under new management. However recent reviews are positive and from their website their prices are reasonable so a leisurely stroll there and back is definitely worth a try - I’d love to have your thoughts should you visit it. GL51 4TN. 01242 862072. The “hill” where the famous cheese roll takes places on (end of) May bank holiday Monday is roughly 4 miles away. It can be clearly seen but to get proper perspective it needs to be visited - it’s crazily steep!

The Bell is our other local pub a walkable circa 1 mile from Rivendell annex. It backs on to the local playing field which is accessible from the pub garden. The main restaurant is in the conservatory overlooking the playing fields. The food is good and reasonably priced. GL51 4XQ. 01242 862245.

Without doubt the best fish and chip takeaway! Tucked away in a housing estate circa 3 miles from Rivendell annex this gem produces, in my opinion, the best fish and chips locally. GL51 3PQ.

Walks

The Cotswold Way is 102 miles long. It starts at Chipping Campden and finishes in Bath and takes in some beautiful scenery. If 102 miles is a tad too long for you, there are some books with circular walks of varying length in the annex. If you make use of them please make sure they are returned for other guests to enjoy.
