境内東側にはしだれ桜で有名な円山公園が隣接していることもあって、地元の氏神（産土）としての信仰を集めるとともに観光地としても多くの人が訪れる人気スポット！ 正月三が日の初詣の参拝者数は近年では約100万人と京都府下では伏見稲荷大社に次ぐ2位となっている。また東西南北四方から人の出入りが可能なため、楼門が閉じられることはなく伏見稲荷大社と同じように夜間でも参拝が可能なのも魅力。
