A looming landmark on the north Kent coastline. It is on two long-distance walking or cycling routes: The Viking Coastal Trail and The Saxon Shore Way. There’s a pub and car park close to the fort, but even better are the delis and cafés in the seaside resort of Herne Bay four miles west, or the Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie on the seafront three miles east.

With it’s vast shingle beach and looming nuclear power station,Dungeness really does feel like the end-of-the-world, rather than the end-of-the-line for the small steam and diesel locomotives that chug here on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch railway from Hythe . Britain's only desert and one of Europe's largest expanses of shingle, Its rich plant variety together with the many wooden fishing huts and lighthouses scattered all around make Dungeness a unique site to visit. Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage and its famous garden is here (although it is private it can be viewed from the road) . Eclectic art galleries are dotted about in various clapboard dwellings. The headland is a national nature reserve and you’ll see lots of weird and wonderful flora and fauna. The pilot pub is renowned for fish and chips .

The rural village of St Margaret’s at Cliffe, between Dover and Deal, is set a couple of miles inland on the South Foreland Heritage Coast. It’s a beautiful stroll down to sand, shingle and pebble St Margaret’s Bay, or you can follow footpaths through South Foreland Valley to South Foreland Lighthouse White Cliffs of Dover. St Margaret’s Bay is the departure point for attempts to swim to France, which on sunny days looks very close. Francophiles wanting a more relaxing pursuit should have a drink in the nearest pub to France, The Coastguard pub , an historic and unpretentious pub right on the beach with outdoor tables for walk ins.

The place to go if you like quirky shops, galleries, oysters, and the English seaside. Really nice old town with fishermen beach huts dotted all along seafront. A couple of miles west with less crowds is Seasalter, which is famous for oysters (muddy offshore oyster beds are revealed when the tide is out) and Michelin-starred The Sportsman (make a reservation in advance). Few seaside walks can beat the hour-long stroll east from Seasalter, along Whitstable’s rugged beach with its weathered upturned fishing boats, to quiet Tankerton, and the lovely JoJo’s restaurant.

With a thriving art scene, the old town is great for a wander. Near the Harbour Arm stone pier you will find the modern Turner Contemporary art gallery which has rotating exhibitions throughout the year. Dreamland Margate is an amusement park with vintage rides. Millions of seashells decorate the Shell Grotto’s underground passages and Margate’s sandy beach draws plenty of crowds in the summer months.

Camber having three miles of sand and dunes makes it a great place for a walk and relax in quiet dune. There are plenty of car parks but the first car park coming from Rye accesses the beach at a quieter part of the dunes . The tide here is strong, and although these are shallow waters for a long way out, there have been many swimmers who have got into trouble . Be careful but do enjoy this fabulous beach . There are toilets and a shop in this car park and more in the larger one further up the beach. On a windy day the far end of the beach is full of kitesurfer jumping the waves . Lessons can be had at the kitesurfing centre here. The Galliant - boutique hotel with a gorgeous restaurant. Booking essential - no children under 10 The Owlers beach grill -great for more relaxed option.
