The “Hidden Gem” of the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is, at 7000´, a higher resort community than either Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear. This “best kept secret on the mountain” is secluded (nearly four miles away from State Highway 18), and surrounded by National Forest. For all these reasons it has remained small, picturesque, and uncrowded.

"National Children's Forest The National Children’s Forest is 3,400 acres of forest nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Visitor Information Center is open on Saturdays and Sundays. Hours 9:00am to 5:00pm for the summer This spectacular area boasts some of the most beautiful backcountry in the San Bernardino Mountains, which includes chaparral, yellow pine forest, and lush riparian zones. The Children’s Forest was created in the wake of the 1970 Bear Fire; the area was replanted with trees bearing the names of children. In 1993, the first trail was established by a work group of children from around the country. This ¾ -mile Interpretive Trail at the top of Keller Peak Road can still be hiked today."

The Exploration Trail is a family friendly, non-motorized 4.5 mile trail with a 12% grade. This trail was designed by children along with the U.S. Forest Service personnel and other professionals. There are interpretive panels located throughout the 0.75 mile Interpretive Trail Loop section near the Upper Exploration trail. During winter, the trail offers an exciting snowshoe or cross country skiing trek. See species that have developed unique survival techniques to combat harsh conditions. Conifer trees, like the Sugar pines are the tallest pine species in the world. Manzanita is a fire-adapted shrub that requires the intense heat of a fire to open the tough seed coat in order to regenerate. Parking is available at the Children’s Forest Visitor Center during their open season. The Children’s Forest Visitor Center is located adjacent to Deerlick Fire Station on State Highway 18 in Running Springs, 1 mile east of State Highway 330.
