Food Scene

Max Beach is one of the most spectacular beach clubs on the Costa del Sol. You'll find that the prices are more in the 'upper' part, as a meal will rarely cost you under 40€ per head, but the place is truly spectacular. It also features a large sports bar and swimming pool with Balinese beds.

Da Vinci is a busy Italian restaurant with many traditional dishes, but my personal favourite here is a bit unusual: pasta al vodka (yes, it's actually really nice).

East and West is located in the El Zoco Shopping Centre and is a hidden gem for proper Thai dishes. Run by John and his Thai wife Hazel, you would never expect this slightly run-down, café-looking venue to serve such spectacular Thai cuisine. It's really worth the dive. Don't expect elegant dining - just fantastic Thai food at a very reasonable price!

The fish, the meat and the pizzas are really fantastic here (I'd actually dare to say that they're quite a bit better than nearby Da Vinci's). A very nice meal and the price is acceptable; you pay what you get.

Drinks & Nightlife

Family-run by brothers George, Steffany and Víctor, George's Bar is a typical local pub and café. They serve nice food and have a neat terrace surrounded by glass curtains for the cooler months. Great place for a drink or some grub.

David's Bar is one of the longest lasting local pubs, open for over 25 years in Riviera del Sol. It's popular amongst locals and tourists and is open every day from noon until 4 am (yes, that late!) featuring two pool tables (reds and yellows, not those American billiards), darts, slot machines, cigarette machine, and even some snacks.

Lugares emblemáticos

The Senda Litoral is a wooden boardwalk which has been built along the shore line just down the road. You can get to it via any of the beach accesses. It is a beautiful walk in either direction and it stretches for many miles along the coast. If you walk down to the sea and start walking to your left, after about 30-40 minutes you will find the busy town of La Cala de Mijas (with a lot of nice beach bars along the way). If, instead, you walk to your right, you will reach the leisure port of Cabopino, where the boardwalk currently ends. Here also you will find more great restaurants and beach bars. Either way, it's a fantastic walk around all the coves, little bays and beaches, and a favourite amongst all locals and visitors.

Gastronomía

El Pikoteo is a typical Spanish restaurant serving fantastic 'pescaíto' dishes (traditional portions of fried fish, many types to choose from) located in the little fishing village of La Cala de Mijas which is now the trendiest location for fine dining. Just off the main boulevard where all the restaurants are located, you will find El Pikoteo. I recommend without a doubt their lobster paella (arroz con bogavante) which, at only 15€ per head (min. 2 pax) is absolutely out of this world. This type is a very juicy paella, served with a lot of broth, know as 'arroz caldoso' (like rice from the stew). It's really worth it! Booking is difficult so my best advice is to just come early.

MEAT, MEAT, MEAT. Let me quickly explain how I discovered this venue. I am lucky to have worked with one of Málaga's most renowned food critiques and eventually became friends with him, and one day I asked him which was the best restaurant for meat in the south of Spain. He made a phone call to another connoisseur of great cuisine he knew and after a few minutes chatting they both concluded that the best restaurant in Southern Spain for meat is Mesón La Salina, a little family-run restaurant which has run for many decades in Los Boliches. I visited La Salina for the first time and could not believe the quality of the meat! My girlfriend said that never in the restaurants she had been to in Dubai or New York had she tried such exquisite beef as here. I totally recommend this venue to all meat lovers who are willing to put their hand a bit deeper in their pockets. Expect to pay for a meal for 2 with a bottle of nice wine at least 120 € (60 € per head). It is well worth the drive (or the Uber ride, if you have some wine).
