Food Scene

Advertises itself as the biggest wok restaurant in Europe, and you can believe it. It offers lavish buffets with Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian dishes, as well as basic European food. There is a low flat fee. Chinese food is the mainstay, with chefs from China cooking to individual order. The best night is Monday. Most Chinese restaurants in the country are closed that day, and the owners like to bring their families to De Mallejan for a special treat, so the restaurant does its very best.

A nouveau Greek restaurant that has modernized the classic Greek restaurant menu. The mixed hors d'oeuvres, served on a platter, are a memorable starter. In the summer there are a few tables out front on the Vecht.

This is the place to go on a sunny day for lunch or dinner on a float in the bend of the Vecht River. You will be sitting on a spot that for centuries lay on the water route connecting Utrecht and what used to be the Zuiderzee. Across the river, until about 1900, stood a stately castle that controlled traffic, but which has been replaced by a small, modest neighborhood. The views in the other directions are lovely as well as historical. The house with a classical facade behind you, Huis ten Bosch, was built by the architect of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, Jacob van Campen. The food is fine, and the tables are not too close to each other. Special: Le Brasseur is open seven days a week from 12 noon to 11 p.m.

A kilometer outside the center, the kind of place where you might find yourself in the midst of a wedding party. Changes hands all the time, but keeps up a constant, middle-of-the-road quality.

Our favorite. The woman in charge, Sura, is completely dedicated to the restaurant, and it shows in the atmosphere of the place and the courtesy of the staff. The fare has echoes of Sura's origins in Tunisia. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Tell Sura that you are staying with us and she'll be pleased enough perhaps to offer you a drink on the house.

A well-appointed restaurant in an historic building, a former cloister, a few minute's walk from the b&b. There's a bar, and then a number of rooms, each with its own character. In the summer, you can sit outside on the water or on the back terrace. Open all week, from 8 in the morning till 5 p.m.

The most spectacular medieval castle in the Netherlands, which happens to have been built in the late 19th century. The interior is also stunning, with its tapestries and armor and art objects. Some of the tours are especially geared to children.

Slot Zuylen Castle is situated on the river Vecht in the tiny village of Oud-Zuilen near Utrecht, The Netherlands. Whilst retaining many of its medieval castle-like features it was converted into a country mansion in the 18th century. Its most famous resident was Belle van Zuylen (Isabelle de Charrière), writer of fame and feminist avant la lettre. Slot Zuylen opened its doors to visitors 60 years ago and has meanwhile acquired museum status. The past is recalled to life through guided tours, garden walks, concerts and special events.

Arts & Culture

A kilometer away, on the grounds of the town hall, there is a small, low-key museum dedicated to the history and ethnography of the villages on the Vecht River - Maarssen, Breukelen and Loenen. The museum always has an interesting exhibition going, and there is a café that is especially attractive in the summer, under the trees of Goudestein, the main country house of Maarssen.
