My guide of places, restaurants, vineyards, and markets to visit.

Sightseeing.

Here are villages, towns, and places nearby that I recommend visiting.
One of the wonders of the world. This area is exceptionally beautiful. It is possible to hire electric boats and tour through the canyon. We provide information for hiring boats and canoes at the house. Lac Saint Croix is another area to visit, en route, should you wish to swim, sunbathe, go hiking or hire canoes, boats or paddle boards.

Saint-Maxime is a commune in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. It is only a half hours drive from the house (traffic permitting)! Located on the French Riviera, 90 km west from Nice. Its inhabitants are called Maximois or Maximoises in French. There are some good family beaches along this strength of the Mediterranean. Several of the restaurants are on the beaches and make a lovely beach day out. From Saint Maxime it is possible to take the ferry that runs every 15 mins over to Saint Tropez. The enjoyable ferry ride is about ten to fifteen minutes long.

If you have binoculars take them with you. The expansive views are truly stunning. Take your camera and walking shoes. Tourtour is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is known as, 'The village in the sky.' It is a twenty-minute drive from home. The architecture and environment have been preserved. The main square is spacious and welcoming and the alleys open onto an exceptional panorama. There are eight fountains in the village as well as a paddlewheel from the old oil mill which is still in use today. There is a rich medieval past in this village and two castles with benevolent towers and Saint-Denis church. You will love it! Enjoy refreshments at the local cafes and soak up the atmos! There is a good restaurant here called, Restaurant La Farigoulette, (see my restaurant section). Make sure you book a table at the end of the terrace where you will enjoy the spectacular views as you dine.

This is a local village not far from the house (eight minutes by car). It is known for its wines and olives which are important to the agricultural community. There are three mills still producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil. There are two mini supermarkets, cafes, tabacconists, hairdressers, coffee shop and restaurants.

Draguignan is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, in southeastern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department and self-proclaimed "Capital of Artillery" and "Porte du Verdon". The city is 42 km from St. Tropez, and 80 km from Nice. The former prefecture of the Var. This booming city went in a few years from the status of administrative and military to the status of a tourist city. It is culturally dynamic, knowing how to enhance its historical heritage. Beautiful avenues decorated with plane trees surround the old town which deserves a long stroll around the porches, old houses, carved doors, and the many squares which all have a history. The commercial area of Draguignan has just about every necessary shop required, such as Entrepot Bricolage (hardware/plumbing), Gammevert (garden nursery) to the large Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi, Intermarche.

A charming village. Don't miss the Commanderie des Templiers du Ruou founded in 1150. It has many rare species of trees, caves and beautiful waterfalls, and rose gardens. In the summer, Villecroze organizes concerts in the St. Victor Chapel (12 and 13th Century). These are given by the International Academy of Music. and bring musicians together from all over the world. There is an old dungeon attached to the castle.

During the summer season there is almost a special activity every day in Cotignac: craft market twice a week, flea market every Sunday, pottery market and vegetable/food market. In the evenings there are two markets (during July/August)on Wednesday and Friday evenings. There is also an open air cinema in Cotignac but you’d need to go online and check out, The Festival Les Toiles du Sud, for viewing times and days. There is also the Notre Dame de Graces which is a Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin and one of the most visited places in the department. Louis XIV, accompanied by Anne of Austria, his mother, made a pilgrimage there. Very beautiful dominant view of the plain and the surrounding hills. A little further, if you continue the path on foot, you can go to the Saint Joseph Monastery.

Perched at 1,097 m above sea level, Bargème is the highest village in the Var and offers breathtaking views of the valley. Dominated by the towers of its medieval castle partially devastated by the wars of religion. This heritage site will delight lovers of old stones and medieval heritage.

Aups has preserved, as part of its heritage, some interesting historical remains from the 11th to 16th century: town walls, ruins of a fort, clocktower, Gothic collegiate church, etc This town is en route from the Bastide to the Gorge du Verdon and I suggest stopping here for refreshment and viewing the architecture. Market Days: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.00 - 12.30 NB: Aups is known for its truffle museum and many Parisian restaurants come here to buy their truffles!

I thoroughly recommend visiting these cascades for a unique site and spot of swimming in the rock pools. Less busy during weekdays. The village of Salernes sits just next to the entrance of Sillans-la-Cascade which is useful if you want a light lunch or refreshments either before or after your visit. Plenty of parking.

Larger than most of the villages in the region, Fayence is a very attractive town and a pleasure to explore as well as being a good base for exploring the region and has a wide selection of cafes and restaurants. There is only a ten minute drive from here to the Lac de Saint Cassien where you can go swimming, hire paddle boats and paddle boards. If you decide to take a day out in the Fayence area it is well worth visiting the village of Le Mons which is the highest village in the Pays de Fayence. There is a wonderful Auberge in Mons that provides a good Provençal menu and has the most stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. From Fayence it is possible to take a short walk to the medieval village of Tourrettes to witness beautiful views from the main square and visit the art galleries, restaurants and cafes.

This forest town is situated in the center of the Massif des Maures. You can see it perched on the hill from the Loggia at home, especially at night with its twinkling lights in the distant. The Fort Freinet is a fortified village from the Middle Ages (12th century) situated on a steep hill dominating the present village of La Garde-Freinet. The fort is registered as a natural exceptional site. This village is very pretty and not far from Saint Tropez.

This medieval village is fabulously beautiful and within close proximity to the Gorge du Verdon. You will find art galleries on display between the numerous restaurants and cafes. There are beautifully crafted stone medieval bridges with views of the cascades tumbling beneath them.
