“Best Burger” six years running from the Gazette and C/S Independent. A layer of melted cheese (forming a skirt), grass-fed beef, house-made condiments, and eco-friendly practices set this local burger joint apart.

A local coffee roaster and cafe, Switchback is one of our favs for an excellent pour-over or the best chai latte in town (get it with oat milk!). The cafe is nestled in a neighborhood near downtown and serves up tasty coffee drinks and light fare.

If you have earned some serious carb intake, this is the place to grab one of the best cinnamon rolls we have ever tasted. Top it with crumbled bacon, if that’s your thing, and add a savory chicken biscuit sandwich to get the right sweet-salty ratio.

With a rotating menu of seasonal cuisine, this is an amazing local spot to either grab lunch on their beautiful outdoor patio or celebrate a special occasion and enjoy the 5-course meal for dinner. During the summer months on Saturday mornings they also host a small farmer’s market and serve a la carte brunch items on the patio with a local band for entertainment.

Although the atmosphere leaves something to be desired, the food is amazing which is why it’s usually packed around lunchtime. Call in your order and have a picnic in the park or bring it back to the house to enjoy.

Sightseeing

This should be a required stop for those visiting Colorado Springs. This park is free to the public and has so much to offer. If you want to escape some of the crowded areas of the Main Parking lot and the Central Garden Trails, we highly recommend going all the way around to the South Parking lot and hiking the Ute Trail. If you have little kids or just a short amount of time to get a hike in, the Ridge Trail (across the street from the South Parking lot) is a fun, quick loop. Grab a picnic lunch or dinner and enjoy the views at the High Point Overlook (a great place to see the sunset as well).

We LOVE our zoo! There are so many interactive exhibits and the zoo itself is situated on a beautiful mountainside that overlooks the city. Feeding the giraffes is always a highlight, and if you aren’t scared of heights, we highly recommend the sky ride (we like to bring a picnic lunch with us to the top). It can get very busy in the summer months, so going first thing or later in the day can be better to avoid crowds. Wear comfortable shoes because there’s a lot of uphill and downhill walking.

If you haven’t been to the top of one of Colorado’s 14,000 ft. peaks, this might be a good time to try it. This is at least a half-day trip to enjoy the peak at a leisurely pace and explore the surrounding area. The new summit complex is set to open in 2020. If you want to hike it (and truly earn the donut at the summit house), we recommend hiking via The Crags Trailhead rather than Barr Trail.

Enjoy this eclectic small town located at the base of Pikes Peak. Hike the Barr Trail, peruse the local shops, sip a mate from Mate Factor Café, and make sure to stop in at the Penny Arcade for some skee-ball (or any other arcade game you can imagine). Just outside of Manitou is Old Colorado City, which has an amazing farmer’s market on Saturday mornings and also hosts some amazing shops and restaurants. Check out Adam’s Mountain Café for an amazing breakfast or lunch menu.

The south-west area of Colorado Springs offers lots of hiking options. Seven Bridges is a beautiful 3-mile round-trip hike that crosses a canyon stream, you guessed it, seven times. Mount Cutler is a short and steep 2-mile hike to a rewarding overlook of the area. Check out Helen Hunt Falls if you are in the area and stop at Ivywild for a cold drink or a bite to eat.
