Afternoon tea is an English institution – a nineteenth-century invention to lift the aristocracy’s spirits when they felt peckish towards the end of the day. Tea at Kilworth House has therefore remained true to its roots. There is a generous range of sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries, plus ten different varieties of tea. For a more modern twist, you can also opt for coffee or hot chocolate. Best of all, you can take afternoon tea anywhere from your room to the library. Wherever you choose, we’ll bring it to you, arranged on a large, three-tiered stand.

Leicester is privileged to have one of the best-preserved timber framed halls in the country dating back 600 years. The History of the Guildhall The Guildhall is a historic building and the oldest building still in use in the city. It was Leicester’s first police station and between 1876 and the 1900’s and saw many unsavoury characters pass through its doors. The Great Hall itself was built in about 1390 as a meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi (a small but powerful group of businessmen and gentry) and it’s also believed that Shakespeare performed here during Tudor times. Over the years it has had many uses, including housing one of the oldest public libraries and serving as the Town Hall. After restoration, the Guildhall was opened to the public as a museum in 1926. This remarkable castle, built on the instruction of William the Conqueror, has been my family’s home for 450 years. Prior to the Watson’s ownership the Castle was held by the crown. There are very few other homes that have been continuously occupied for nearly 1000 years and within that time been owned by just one family since being relinquished as a royal Castle. I think this is a particularly extraordinary aspect of Rockingham’s long and fascinating story. The Castle is now home to my wife, Elizabeth and our children, all of whom enjoy the Castle as I did as a child.

There are also indoor and outdoor picnic areas, a brilliant cafe selling homemade cakes and light lunches, lots of space to run off some energy, and even a mini reservoir trail at just a 100m distance – perfect for little legs. For a fascinating family day out in Leicestershire, head to our iconic Foxton Locks. There are flights of locks all over our network – but not like Foxton. It's home to two amazing feats of engineering in the heart of Leicestershire, on the Grand Union Canal. As well as the longest and steepest staircase locks in the UK, the site is home to the remains of the inclined plane, a magnificent, if slightly weird, piece of Victorian engineering. But that's not the only reason over 4,000 boats pass through Foxton Locks each year, making it one of the most visited places on our canals. We recommend you take some time out to watch boats travel up or down the locks, or take a boat trip yourself, before relaxing at the pubs and picnic spots.

The Harborough Museum grew out of the collection of the Market Harborough Historical and Archaeological Society, which held its first meeting in 1931. The following year several historic objects were displayed at a talk by H G Coales on the ‘history of Market Harborough’. The first recorded object given to the Society was an engraving of the town, presented by Mr Harris in 1932. The Society’s growing collection was displayed in Welland House in The Square where it remained until 1939, when the ‘Museum Room’ was opened in the County Library on The Square. In 1981 a partnership between the District and County Councils and the Historical Society was formed to open a new museum. On the 28th June 1983 the Harborough Museum opened in the Symington Building. The Society’s collection was the foundation of the museum and from the 1980s the County Council Museum Service developed and managed the museum collection with the continuing support of the Society. For the next 30 years displays, exhibitions, talks, events and publications celebrated the history and culture of the Harborough area and many objects were accessioned into the Market Harborough collection.
