This is one of our favorite things to do on a Saturday. Featuring many local/regional artists, farmers market, live music and lots of different food choices. Just over 1 mile from our place. You can walk or bike to it - over the Acosta Bridge or along the new pedestrian walkway on the Fuller Warren Bridge.

There is a wide pedestrian walkway/bike path along both the North and South banks of the river, connected by pedestrian walkways on the Main Street and Acosta bridges. It is a short walk from the apartment to the Acosta Bridge or continue up to Mosh/Memorial Park to get on the Southbank Riverwalk. You will see lots of people out “walking the bridges”. People go there to stroll, exercise, walk their dogs or just socialize.

Fernanda is a beautiful old city north of Jacksonville. It is fastest to go straight up I-95 and take the Yulee Exit, but you can also take the Heckshire Drive exit, pass the Zoo and drive along the Ocean on A1A. In the downtown area are many shops and great restaurants.

Visit dtjax.org or visitjacksonville.com for a complete listing of events and more! #ilovejax #dtjax Some great spots are the Florida theater, a beautiful old theater where a variety of performances from music acts to lectures are presented and the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts, where the symphony performs and broadway musicals are presented. The Jacksonville Arena hosts larger concerts and the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball team play in the stadium across the street. Great dining and drinking spots include Intuition Microbrewery, Bellweather, Estrella Covina and Cowford Chophouse. Manifest distillery is another interesting spot. There are electric scooters available downtown and public transportation includes the People Mover train, Beach Buggy and Go Tuk’n. You can take a water taxi from the South Bank across to the city. They also do special tours. jaxrivertaxi.com There are a number of seasonal events. For example, on the Southbank Riverwalk (close to the apartment and a great place to take a walk) they have Sip and Stroll the third Thursday of the month in the Spring. It features live music, food trucks and beverages.

Historic Springfield (where we live) is Florida's largest registered, historic neighborhood. The neighborhood celebrated it's 150th Birthday in 2019. The biggest "free" event is Porchfest, which is held the first Saturday of November - jacksonvilleporchfest.org. There are also the spring and Christmas tours of homes, where one can see the marvelous renovations residents have done with these beautiful old homes. Our favorite restaurant here is Crispy’s, but there are several other great spots, including Hyperion Microbrewery and Strings Sorts Bar. A hidden gem is The District on North Walnut St. Specialty shops include 1748 Bake House, Social Grounds Coffee, Scoops Icecream and Dreamette. Music on Main occurs in Sesquicentennial Park and there are occasional bike socials or other events. Go to Sparcouncil.org for a calendar of events.

What more could you want? Beautiful beaches, great restaurants and live music. There are too many great spots to list, but some of our favorites are Flying Iguana, Mezzaluna, Royal Palm and North Beach Fish Camp. A favorite of young people, this is an enjoyable area for all ages. We love to stroll around the shops, stop for a cocktail or meal and walk out on the beach. Parking can be a challenge, especially on weekend nights. It is about a 25 minute drive from the apartment.

A short drive south of Atlantic Beach is Jacksonville Beach. Seawalk Pavilion is the centerpiece. It is an open space with a concert shell where events are often held, the most prominent of which is Deck the Chairs, from Thanksgiving until New Years Day. Within walking distance are numerous restaurants, bars and shops and a large public parking lot is across the street. Check out Casa Marina for their incredible brunch buffet. Margaritaville has one of the best ocean views from their bar and restaurant. 11 South is a great restaurant. Head toward town on Beach Blvd. to Taco Lu or Angie’s Subs. There are a number of outfitters in the Beach area where you can rent bikes, paddle boards and other outdoor equipment. The beach is very bike and pedestrian-friendly.

City/town information

There is too much to say about the oldest city in America to fit here, so we will just offer a few highlights. It is about a 50 minute drive from the apartment to St. Augustine. History buffs will enjoy the old fort, Castillo San Marco. Stroll though the old city on St. George St. for great shops, restaurants and bars. We love Prohibition Kitchen. Head over to the square and visit all the great art shops. We know the owners of Philip Anthony. Say hello to Philip and his wife, Faith and tell them Tony and Kimberly sent you. Around the corner is our favorite little Italian place, Nona’s Trattoria on Aviles St. (Oldest street in the country). Also head over to Bar Harbor Cheesecake for a unique dessert treat. Take a drive up A1A along the ocean and check out Caps on the Water. This is one of the best seafood restaurants in the area and a beautiful setting on the Intracoastal Waterway. Fort and Post is a new restaurant with a rooftop view of the bay. Casa Reina is a great Mexican place. Look online for the schedule at the St. Augustine Amphitheater (The AMP) and Ponte Vera Concert Hall. These are two great music venues and they often have some great acts.
