Walk in the footsteps of some of history’s most notable characters in the castle’s beautiful gardens, join in the busy calendar of exciting events and discover Sudeley’s many treasures in their fascinating exhibitions. Sudeley Castle offers a spectacular day out in the heart of the beautiful Cotswolds countryside - book your tickets today for a truly unforgettable day out. Today Sudeley Castle remains the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within the grounds - Queen Katherine Parr, the last and surviving wife of King Henry VIII – who lived and died in the castle. Henry himself, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Elizabeth I and Richard III have all played a part in Sudeley’s story. King Charles I found refuge here during the Civil War, when his nephew Prince Rupert established headquarters at the Castle. Following its ‘slighting’ on Cromwell’s orders at the end of the Civil War, Sudeley lay neglected and derelict for nearly 200 years.

With a reputation for having some of Britain’s best antique shops, Stow-on-the-Wold pretty much encompasses everything you might be after in a picture-perfect Cotswolds town. Small, cute and abundantly characterful, Stow-on-the-Wold was once known for its wool trade – its large Market Square once saw up to 20,000 sheep being sold at one time. Check out St Edwards Church, famous largely for it’s gorgeous north door, which is flanked by two ancient yew trees. It’s not hard to believe the rumour that this Fairytale-esque feature inspired Tolkien’s ‘Doors of Durin’ in Lord of the Rings. With a surprising number of superb delis and restaurants for such a small town, The Old Butchers is the local favourite. As the name suggests, it’s a former butchers and now restaurant, serving meat and seafood in equal measure.

Often voted one of the prettiest villages in Britain, Bourton-on-the-Water is worth the detour to see its lovely high street which the River Windrush runs through. Little arched stone bridges run across the water, and in December a lit Christmas tree is erected in the middle of the river. Get those waterside selfies in and check out the nearby Dragonfly Maze (an elaborate hedge maze). Birdland Park and Gardens is down the road, for any penguin or parrot fans, and the village holds a cute farmer’s market on the fourth Sunday of each month.

If you are a fan of archaeology and history this should interest you. A nice walk up to the site - park on the road in the lay-by where the English Heritage sign is. The walk benefits from some wonderful views. The site itself is fabulous- not loads to see but a really interesting place to visit non-the-less. A chambered tomb dating from about 3800 BC. Thirty one skeletons were discovered in the tomb, and these and other artifacts can be seen in the village folk museum in Winchcombe. Belas Knap is an outstanding example of a Neolithic long barrow.

Food scene

Hayles Fruit Farm covers approximately 100 acres of picturesque countryside on the outskirts of the Cotswold market town of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. With origins back to 1880 the land, along with 4 other fruit farms on the edge of the town, was initially planted with apples & Cob nuts under the instruction of Lord Sudeley. More than 130 years later Hayles Fruit Farm is the only one to survive! Farmed by the Harrell family since the 1950’s it has, as you might imagine, seen many changes - not least in the form of diversification. That said the task of growing, producing and marketing top quality fruit remains paramount. Over the years the range of crops grown has been expanded and now includes apples, pears, plums, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and of course the original Cob Nuts. Whilst the farmshop produces an important outlet for the sale of this produce we also have excellent working relationships with a number of local retail outlets - including Warners Budgens and the Midcounties Co-op - both of whom have for a number of years marketed their goods under their local produce lines. There on the farm diversification continues to play a major role. The farmshop offers visitors some great tasting local produce, a delicious lunch can be enjoyed in the ‘Orchard’ (our Restaurant and Tearoom) and other on-site activities to checkout including a nature trail, Pick Your Own Fruit (in season), clay pigeon shooting and coarse fishing. Whether you’re just passing through or want to use the campsite as a base from which to explore the fantastic countryside & many local attractions you’re very welcome. For more information on Hayles Fruit Farm or how we can help enhance your Cotswold experience please do get in touch with a member of our friendly Hayles team.

What began as a simple passion for real food and a desire to feed their children better has grown into Daylesford as we know it today, one of the most sustainable organic farms in the UK. At Daylesford, they are dedicated to growing, producing and cooking seasonal, organic food. It must be fresh, and full of flavour, packed with the many vitamins and minerals that come from natural food, picked and eaten at its peak. RESTAURANT 5 NORTH STREET Husband-and-wife team Marcus and Kate founded Restaurant 5 North Street in the chocolate box Cotswolds town of Winchcombe. Inspired by such classic restaurants as Shaun Hill’s former Merchant House, he created an informal dining room, devoid of pretence and fuss. Sensational flavours are served in his unstuffy dining room in a variety of menus, from lunch through to a la carte dinner and degustation. Under Gus’s expert tutelage, flavours sing. Dishes are presented in forms that are as pretty as a picture. His exceptional contacts with the region’s finest producers enable him to cook with the seasons, bringing the best of local food and drink to the table. Having learned from great chefs, like Michel Roux Snr, Gus offers cuisine with enormous finesse. Canapes are a riot of flavour, mains are robust and underpinned by starry cooking while dreamy desserts live long in the memory.
