Nearly free of charge for all students (even foreigners), it is a place where people from all walks of life come together for study, discussion, performance and socializing. Built in the 1950s on volcanic rock typical of the area south of the ancient lake, UNAM is a building project on a scale like no other in CDMX. It's so big, it has it's own bus system called the PumaBus. My favorite things to do at UNAM include the main library with murals on all sides designed by muralist Juan O'Gorman, the Olympic Stadium with large mural by Diego Riveria, the MUAC modern art museum, and the sculpture park (near the MUAC).

Parks & Nature
It is a peaceful place to run, walk, or read. There's even a full-size basketball court with 5v5 on the weekends. One interesting point, Viveros is the tree nursery for all of CDMX, which means it's where they start to grow all the trees that are eventually planted throughout the city.

It is a peaceful place to run, walk, or read. There's even a full-size basketball court with 5v5 on the weekends. One interesting point, Viveros is the tree nursery for all of CDMX, which means it's where they start to grow all the trees that are eventually planted throughout the city.
This is my "home mountain" and tallest peak in CDMX. In a place surrounded by them, sometimes it feels hard to get away to the peaks for a good workout or relaxing stroll. Ajusco is your best bet. The mountain sits about an hour's drive from central Coyoacán. Taxi or public transport is an option, but I recommend having a car and/or hiring a guide who has a car. Although there are hikes of all levels, the hike to the summit peak, "el Pico de Aguila", is a medium difficulty (Class II) scramble with a little wayfinding. Given this, I recommend only experienced hikers attempt the summit. Don't hesitate to ask me if you want advice or need a guide.

The cultural center is architecturally notable and sits in a beautifully refurbished mansion that meshes old with new. It includes a cafe, bookstore, small movie theater, and various other multi-use spaces. The service is excellent if you're looking for a specific book, by the way.

More than just movies, this is a place where people go to soak in culture from all over the world. At any given time there will be events, tons of people hanging out, a multitude of food choices, and movies plus documentaries from at least 15 different countries. Note: be careful if you don't read Spanish because, for example, a movie in French will have Spanish subtitles (never English). Check for special exhibitions (e.g. Tarantino takeover).
