One of our favorites when we live over in NE Portland. It's still worth a drive and we still go every now and again. This location is much smaller of the two. It's fine if you can get a table and takeout is a great option from this location.

Of the two locations. this one is a little larger and a better dining experience. It's easy to order too much though, so be careful

I've hiked this mountain about 75 times as training for mountaineering expeditions, and never get tired of it. It's mostly wooded and has a great view of the Columbia Gorge from the summit. There are 2 variations....Shorter and steeper, or longer and not as steep. The trails are well maintained and very easy to navigate. Get there early to avoid the crowds. Especially on sunny weekends. It's around 7.3 miles on the shorter version and 7.8 on the longer version and gains about 2800 feet. It's a little over an hour away with good traffic.

It's only about 30 minutes away with good traffic and worth the drive if you want a quick hike. On sunny weekends it gets extremely crowded, but if you start at the trail head around 7, it's not bad at all. I've done this hike around 60-70 times training for mountaineering expeditions, and prefer this one in the winter months as there are very few people on the trail. The view is pretty great, especially at sunset. I get to the summit in about 45-50 minutes with pack full of 40lbs worth of water bottles. It's almost impossible to get lost unless you wander off the clearly marked and well maintained trail. It's worth continuing up to Devils Rest, as none of the crowds continue up there.

It's not too complicated, but a map and compass are a good idea just in case. I always carry the 10 essentials to be safe. There are a couple of different routes, but starvation ridge is my favorite. It's pretty steep. Many people use this one as training for climbing Mt Hood. The running joke in the mountaineering community is that people climb Hood to train for Defiance! If you want to avoid the crowds on Dog mountain, but want a similar experience, just go to the top of starvation ridge (about half way to the summit) for a great view of Mt Adams. If you take all the shortcuts(VERY steep), it's about 12 miles round trip to the summit and back.

Ski, snowboard, hike, camp, bike, climb. This is where Portlandiers go on the weekends. If you drive a Subaru, take note of where you park, because the lots will be full of them. A stay at Timberline Lodge is a great experience! There are many activities available in the summer as well as the winter.

I've been to almost 60 countries around the world and this is one of my favorite places of them all. Hike to Jefferson Park at about 6000 feet at the base of the prominence of the mountain. It is absolutely breathtaking. It's about 5.5 miles each way. There's plenty of places to camp, or do it as a long day trip. It's about a 2 hour drive each way in good traffic. Best done from late June/Early July after the snow melts until late October. If there is a lot of snow, it can be very easy to lose the trail, otherwise it is pretty straight forward. I'd recommend knowing how to use a map and compass just in case.

(Access to Springwater Corridor Trail) It's 1.5 miles away. Continue South to the Sellwood Bridge and go across to get to Oaks Park and the Sprinwater Corridor Trail. This is great for biking(paved), jogging or walking. Head north to get to the Eastbank esplanade for some great views or Portland's Downtown from across the river. Head south then east to follow the trail for miles.
