Spectacular views, excellent food and service. Highly recommend three course 'Sharrow Through the Ages' lunch at £22.50p. Evening menu expensive but for a 'one off' treat for a very special occasion - this is the place! 'Set in a grand estate dating to 1840, this upscale hotel is 10.7 miles from the Ullswater Steamers jetty and 2.3 miles from the village of Pooley Bridge. The sophisticated restaurant is known for its wine cellar and offers afternoon tea. The landscaped grounds include 12 acres of gardens.' You need to book. Tel: 017684 86301

Drinks & Nightlife

Several night clubs, pubs and restaurants. Busy at weekends especially in the Summer. 'Old Bowness' is a warren of quaint lanes, nooks and crannies dating from the Middle Ages yet only a few yards from the bustling heart of the town with its huge variety of shops, boats, 15thC church and attractions. During the 19th century, Bowness grew from a small fishing village to a town living almost entirely off tourism and holiday homes. It was the centre of the boat-building industry that provided the sailing yachts, rowing boats and steam launches used on the lake. The arrival of the railway in 1847 in Windermere (the residents of Bowness had opposed a station in their own town) provided much of the momentum for the growth. Readers of Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons series of books will recognise Bowness as the lakeside town of 'Rio'. Bowness-on-Windermere is also home to the Beatrix Potter attraction.
