After Key West was settled, 'Conch' families moved up the Keys to establish small farming and fishing communities. In the mid-1800s, the Russell family homesteaded Umbrella Key, Windley Key's earlier name. The Russell family lived on the land until it was sold to the Florida East Coast Railway in 1908. The railroad was completed in 1912. The quarries and Windley Key Station continued to operate with local trains stopping daily to deliver fresh water and pick up mail and passengers. On return trips, shipments of polished 'keystone' were railed back to the mainland. The quarry was active into the 1960s and today stands as a preserved geological treasure. park fee is $2.50pp Park is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Visitor center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Ranger-led tours are available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

On the southern edge of Key West, Fort Taylor predates the Civil War and is a National Historic Monument housing the largest cache of Civil War armament in the world. Beyond its historical importance, the park is the southernmost state park in the continental United States. Walk the red-brick corridors of Fort Zachary Taylor, past cannon and gun ports, and history becomes more real than books and photos can depict. One better grasps how soldiers lived as they defended the nation’s southeastern coastline. Tour guides and interpretive panels explain how the fort played important roles in the Civil War and Spanish-American War. History is front and center the third weekend of each month as local re-enactors conduct historic demonstrations. The park also boasts Key West’s favorite beach, located at the southern end of the park, providing opportunities for picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, paddling and fishing. You will need a boat ride to get here. Only 1 boat offers this service from Keywest and it books months in advance, So plan accordingly and book early.

Sightseeing

Great place to spend a few hours. They have a nice outdoor bar, restaurant, marina and a ton of charter fishing boats. You can relax at the Tikki Bar and watch all the boats pile up at the famous sand bar. The hotel is nice but pricey, but hey it's the Keys so everything here costs more than on mainland.
