A day market with many traditional resturants. The environment is a little dirty, but there are really peculiar cusines there. I recommend: - 陳師傅全麥麵食專賣店, the whole wheat noodles and dumpling of master Chen. The menu is chinese only, but they are eager to help, and so are many of the customers. - the best Vietnamese restaurant I found in Taipei so far (must check the name, it's in the middle of the ground floor). And I'm right, because I see Vietnamese people going there go. - 日本清華軒, a Japanese chef that invented a unique rice + noodles cuisine. Its dishes are MSG free. Very popular, very affordable and tasty. Avoid the peak time (12.30) if you don't want to wait for ages.

See this Family Mart near Starbucks, McDonalds, etc? Forget about them, turn around the Family Mart corner, and you'll see a "Lavazza" sign. That's my favourite cafe in Beitou. Very small, family run, it has a selection of sweet dessert that can go with your Lavazza coffe.

Waffle and NTU coffee combo. This is the best Waffle in Taipei, inside the beautiful NTU campus. Avoid peak times (around 5.30-6.00pm). But don't buy the coffee here, turn around, walk 50 m and go to the NTU products outlet, and get a great (yet affordable) coffee there. If the weather is nice, you can enjoy your coffee and waffle on the outdoor tables nearby. If it's morning I highly recommend getting a spring roll or two at "无名排队盐水鸡摊" (see in this guide).

The best spring roll you'll ever have. (and Waffle & Coffee combo) Next to McDonald, that you will avoid, there is a small stall in the corner, with two efficient ladies selling spring rolls and soft sweet breads. In the morning only, 8 to 14.00, but usually runs out of them by 11.30 or so. Closed on weekends (by night the sane spot is used by a traditional Taiwanese "salty chicken and pickles" shop). One refreshing and delicious spring roll for 35 nts, and three for 100. I recommend making the combo with the Waffle Place + NTU coffee inside the campus. Just cross Roosevelt Rd. at the traffic light and follow the street inside the NTU campus.

It probably owns the widest collections of artefacts pertaining 5000 years of Chinese history in the world. Half way between a history museum and an art collection, it displays in fact a big part of the personal collection of the late Chinese emperors. Impressive bronze ceremonial cauldrons, jades, ceramics, paintings, incredible sculptures. Plus temporary exhibitions. If you're up for a thorough visit, it will easily take the whole day. I recommend to arrive in the morning, and bring lot of clothing, even in summer, as you may stay for several hours in a heavily air conditioned environment.

The most famous Buddhist (with Taoists contamination of course) temple in Taipei. An iconic view on the spiritual habits of the locals. Nearby, on the west side, there is a night market with street food and clothing, and a covered touristic street with massage saloons and restaurants serving snake or turtle meet. It makes a good combination with the visit to the temple.

The Taipei Confucius temple offers an insight in the Chinese culture. It's both a temple and a museum at the same time, depicting the six Confucian arts in a simple and enjoyable way. The exhibitions are interesting for both adults and kids. The one on the writing in particular, does a good job in explaining how the Chinese characters originated and evolved. You can enjoy a "4D" theater with two alternating shows, one about the history of the Taipei Confucius temple itself, one about the philosophy. and For culture enthusiasts.
