Food You Can Walk To

The reason we love where we live is the walkability to restaurants. Seriously, this makes us so happy.
Ken's is a small grocery store but has everything. The soup, sandwiches, and salads from the deli are delish.

It's only two blocks away, and wow. If you like strong coffee ask for a double short breve cappuccino poured to 6oz. They have really yummy quiche too.

Burrata, need I say more? Yes. Star Destroyer (my favorite new cocktail invented by their bartender).

A neighborhood classic. This pub has been around forever for a reason. It's not fancy, they have TVs, the beer selection is great and so are the burgers.

Also Mexican with a PNW twist. Don't tell Hecho, but I think the yard is better. And cooler. And the margarita's are stronger.

This was our date night place for years. It's small and cozy with creative cocktails and appetizers. Try the truffle popcorn!

A local favorite. The line can get long but that's because the burgers are great! They have milkshakes in many flavors, and chicken and vegetarian options. Oprah says you should eat one before you die, so you probably should.

A little farther away (nine blocks:) but if you love french dip sandwiches then go, go, go! They also have burgers, french onion soup... other stuff that I don't order because I can't say no to the french dip. An added bonus are the projected silent movies that are so weird you won't be able to stop watching.

Seattle's ONLY hockey bar! To be honest, I've never been there, but I want to! It looks fun. The people inside are always cheering and high fiving and then smoking outside. I bet it would be a great place to go because hockey is a Canadian thing and Canadians are laid back and cool (I grew up there so I have a soft spot).

FlintCreek is our local "high end" restaurant. It's pricier, but mmm, mmm. They have grits that are basically an excuse to eat butter.

Good Weather Nature Activities for FREE!

This could also be called Bad Weather Activities. Our weather is pretty unpredictable making us a hardy people group. Seattlites don't care much about hair and makeup (except for my mother) so, if you get rained on you'll fit right in. Go outside and explore, rain or shine!
Walk, jog, run, sit, paddleboard, swim, watch people, have a picnic... We call Green Lake our neighborhood swimming pool. We pretty much live there in the summer. You can rent paddle boards and kayaks at the boathouse.

I highly recommend this for children of any age (0-100). The playground has a concrete tube slide shaped like a salmon! The park also has several hiking trails, long and short and a beach with a view of the mountains. At low tide, you can find sea stars and in November you can watch the salmon run! You won't believe you're in a city. If you want a longer hike, be sure to park in the small lot on NW 100th place behind the QFC on Holman Rd. NW.

Grab some fish and chips at the Red Mill Totem house and have a picnic! At the Ballard locks, you can watch boats go between Lake Washington and the Puget Sound by way of a "complex of locks," (says their website). You will often see seals swimming around hoping to catch salmon. You can see the salmon going through the man-made fish ladder at the viewing station from July through September.

"Discovery Park is a 534-acre park on the shores of Puget Sound in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. It is the city's largest public park and contains 11.81 miles of walking trails," (thank you website). What more can I say? It's beautiful. The trails take you through the trees, along the water, and across a grassy field. Be sure to bring water on hot days.

See some giant sculptures, take a long walk by the water, and watch the boats. I just read a review of someone saying they were "a little disappointed." Whatever, it's free and beautiful.

Golden Gardens is lovely all year round. You'll see beach volleyball, dogs catching frisbees, children digging in the sand, and (on the weekends) big family barbeques. This is as beachy as it gets around here, but be warned, the water is freezing! For a mini hike, try taking the steps down. They start at NW 85th and 32nd Ave NW.

How to be a Tourist

I've lived here for 26 years and I still walk around saying, "wow, this city is so great!"
Don't let the crowds scare you away. It's it worth it! If you want fewer crowds I advise that you go on a weekday morning. Must Do's: Watch the fish throwers, take your picture by the pig (put some change in it too), see the gum wall, eat Beachers mac and cheese, and walk down the steps to the waterfront. What you can skip: buying coffee at "the first Starbucks." The line is long, and the coffee is just as bad as all the other Starbucks (yes, it is. It used to be good until they turned ultra corporate). Take a picture of your self in front of it and then go to Storyville Coffee. Want an affordable-ish lunch with a view? Lowells. Want to drop some cash? Maximillian.

Space Needle, Monorail, the fountain, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and more. IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN or love a good slide, the "Artists at Play" playground (below the space needle end of the monorail) is the bomb. BEST PLAYGROUND EVER! Did I hype it up too much? I don't think so.

Stupendous! Sensational! Spectacular! Yes, it's a library, but the building! The building is a modern miracle (not officially, but it should be). Go all the way to the top and walk (quietly) down the spiral. Make sure you need to use the restroom so you can see the red hallway. Bonus- this is free.
