There's a beautiful hiking trail the whole way around the headland. The beach to the West of the tombolo runs for about 20km and you'll meet very few other people.
It's also well worth getting out to Illauntanig or O'Leary Island as it's sometimes called. There's an early Christian settlement on the island.
