Things of Interest in and around the Douro and Porto:
Linha Do Douro train experience-starts in Porto, ( but the real scenery starts from Regua) to Pocinho, 160km, approx 3.30hrs. the railway hugs the River Douro-magnificent scenery all along the route.
Wine routes, wine tasting, port wine, fishing, bird watching, river cruises, Archaeological park of Coa Valley, Douro waterway, International Douro Nature Park, Experience Days-canoeing, cycling, donkey riding, history and culture, gastronomy and much more!
River beaches. Beaches-there are many beaches along the Porto coast- Matoshinos, Esposinhos, Miramar, Praia Castelo Do Queijo, Viana Do Castelo, Praia Dos Ingleses to name a few!
Amarante a beautiful town with the River Tamega running through it. In the summer months it is normally possible to walk along the walk way over the river. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Many cafes and restaurents and local shops. Pedalos in high season. Golf course close by in Fregim, also a large Aqua Park.
Barcelos-is a lovely town, and hosts a large market on a Thursday ( all day ) clothes, shoes, haberdashery, iron mongery, fruit, vegetables, birds, rabbits, ceramics, plants etc...however the largest market in Portugal is in Espinho, by the sea, which is on a Monday, all day.
Guimaraes is such a beautiful place to visit, and you can take the funicular railway up the Penha Mountain, where you can see for miles. Cafes and picnic areas.
There is so much to see and do, or perhaps you would prefer to stay local, enjoying our surrounding area, with its local cafes, shops and restaurants? Stroll around our land ( at your own risk ) lie on a sun bed, listening to the sounds of the valley...spot the woodpeckers, cuckoos or even an eagle over head.
Host your own bar b q, and watch the sun go down?
The closest cafe is within walking distance, but is very 'local' normally with the land workers taking a well deserved rest there. The closest shops are around 4 km away, with a few restaurants and cafes...freshly baked breads and cakes, and the toast, well, door wedges, smothered in butter both sides!
The closest airport is Porto, just over an hour away. The roads and motorways always a pleasure to drive on-mostly empty and road works virtually non existent!
There is a bus service, but I do not have a timetable at the moment. However a car is necessary to be able to enjoy the surrounding area. If you choose to stay on site only, transport can be arranged, shopping collected etc for an additional fee.
Pets by arrangement only.
Travel cot available.
Honeymoon specials, by arrangement.

So Airbnb asked what makes our neighbourhood so special! Well, our neighbourhood is friendly, quaint, tranquil, stunning, lush. A nature lovers paradise.
To stay at Woodpecker yurt is certainly not basic camping! Its definately glamping- glamorous camping! Yes, your sleeping under canvas, but fully insulated, decorated 'shabby chic' style, beds, storage, kitchen, wood burner and a lovely wet room within a few meters. All on your own large plot of land. Outside bar b q, garden furniture, sun beds, and a dipping pool from July. Plenty of room for an additional tent. Off road parking.
2 new cafe/restaurants within a km- very nice.
We have realised we take the views for granted - you can see many many km’s / miles in the distance .. the land all around is lush ! Close to station Aregos- right by the river Douro- trains into Porto or up to near the borders of Spain ! Very cheap ! Port wine grapes for miles , almond trees in blossom in April . The food and wine is good and very cheap !
