Fanteselen is a one-room apartment with six beds and “Simple Living” standard. Clean and perfect for nature experiences. A great area for biking, hiking, canoeing, and fishing. The price includes a canoe for your use. Fantesalen is a wonderful nature spot where moose and deer can be seen grazing often outside the cabin window. The cabin is built and used primarily as a hunting lodge and carries the mark of simple and practical use.
Fantesalen is a cabin with six beds, two kitchens, and a lot of airy space both outside and within the cabin. This area is the perfect place to get close to Norwegian nature, and the “Simple Living” style will give you a feeling of being thrown back in time. Moose and deer are frequent visitors outside the cabin, and the surrounding areas can display fantastically unique wildlife. There are beautiful cycling and hiking routes nearby, and it is a perfect place for fishing and canoeing.
This cabin is not the place for you if you are looking for a “hotel standard.” The cabin is simple, nice, and clean. The stream is only 300 meters from the house and is a perfect place for a morning swim since there is no shower. The toilet in the outhouse is simple and clean. There is hot and cold water running in the first-floor kitchen, which also has a refrigerator and microwave. In the upstairs kitchen, there is an oven with hotplates for everyday cooking.
Safety Note: There is a steep, short staircase up to the room. We recommend caution when using.
Two and a half kilometers from the cabin, you will find a canoe that belongs to the cabin. You can use the canoe freely during your stay and paddle around the beautiful Nakksjø lake. The loan of life vests and paddles is also included in the rent. Lake Nakksjø is a beautiful body of clear water, 2 kilometers square area, and 8 kilometers to paddle around. The lake has small islands and small quiet, cozy areas where you go ashore and enjoy a picnic, swim or read a book.
The area is quiet, with only a few people in the neighborhood. My family has a house a few hundred meters away, but it is in little use during the summer. The closest neighbors are very nice people and live at the disused railway station about 600 meters away. The nearest village with convenient shops is Drangedal, which is 15 kilometers away.
There are beautiful cycling and hiking routes nearby, and it is a perfect place for fishing and canoeing.
The area has an abundance of wildlife and there is a good chance to spot both beavers and moose. The best time of the day to spot these animals are in the morning and late evenings. We recommend paddling the canoe in the evening to spot the animals at the water's edge. We also recommend taking your car and drive along the many gravel roads on a private “Moose Safari.”
Three kilometers from the cabin, there is a World War II memorial where a Mosquito airplane was shot down and crashed during the bombing of Porsgrunn in 1945. The remains of the aircraft are still at the crash site along with a memorial plaque. The site is close to the road and is accessible by car, foot or bicycle.
We can also recommend “The Telemark Canal,” “The Troll Car,” and other historical sites only 15-30 minutes' drive from the cabin. You can find additional information in the tourist information folder provided in the cabin.
Less than one hour to the south, you will find Kragerø, a gem on Norway’s coastline.
The UNESCO heritage site of Rjukan is less than two hours away. Here you will also find the famous Gaustadtoppen mountain with its amazing views.
Alternative fun activities for children:
Hulfjell Gård is a 20 minutes’ drive away from the cabin. This is a small “visit farm” with a variety of animals and a fun waterpark. My neighbor Jon Halvor runs this farm, and he provides an extra 10% discount if you say you stay at “Fredrik’s AirBnB.” (www.hulfjell.no)
Sommarland i Bø is a 45 minutes’ drive away from the cabin. This is Norway’s largest waterpark and has a variety of waterslides and activities. (sommarland.no)
