Butterfly Machiya is an authentic 100 year old Kyoto Machiya which was lovingly restored (and modernized) by two architects in 2013. The house is located in the exact center of Kyoto.
The home is fully licensed and inspected by Kyoto City for short term rentals. It has also passed a special fire department safety inspection.
There are two linked tatami rooms upstairs for sleeping and one tatami room downstairs for sleeping. There are plans of the building in the 'photo' section.

The Butterfly Machiya is a 100 year old traditional Japanese house located across the street from the Imperial Palace (Gosho) in the exact center of Kyoto, Japan. The house has two floors, two toilets, a separate shower, kitchen and gardens.
The house is in amazing condition and a fabulous example of traditional Japanese architecture and craftsmanship. Each year we do a full maintenance to replace the screens and up keep the house and (as architects) we are inspired by the thoughtfulness and precision of the individual pieces that make up the building.
The house has 2 separate toilets (one upstairs and one downstairs) and one shower/bath room. Most traditional houses only have one toilet.
Our neighborhood is a nice quite place right in the center of Kyoto. It is an old traditional residential zone, so, while their are plenty of restaurants and small shops, there are no large commercial buildings. It is also very, very quiet for the center of town.
We are located within 7 minutes walk of two stations on the Karasuma subway line which is the main line that runs north to south in Kyoto. It takes less than 10 minutes to get from the main Kyoto train station to the house by taxi. In fact, Kyoto is a very small town geographically (nothing is more than 6km away from the house) and it is very easy to get around on public transportation.

Starting October 2018 Kyoto City requires that hosts charge an additional tax called the ACCOMODATION FEE of JPY 200 per guest per night. This fee is paid directly to the city and is NOT included in the Airbnb price. The fee will be collected at the house at the time of arrival. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Cheers.
The house is fully licensed and inspected by the city of Kyoto for short-term stay. This included a full inspection of the house facilities, fire-safety systems and the property complies will all regulations.
It is difficult to find a traditional house is better condition than the Karavansara Gosho Machiya. The gardens have just been re-done and the house is a perfect place to stay to round out your 'Kyoto Experience'
Under Japanese law, all hosts are required to keep a record of all guests. This includes their name, home address, occupation and dates of stay. If your guest does not have a home address in Japan, you will need to collect a copy of their passport stating their nationality and passport number.
To facilitate this process, Airbnb has asked us to make this request visible via the hosting dashboard under ‘Other Notes’ and ‘House Manual’. This way, our guests will be aware of what they need to do when they check-in, before making a reservation.

We normally greet the guests upon their arrival. We live within 10 minutes travel of the house so we can be available should the guests need assistance.
