I was born and raised in Toronto, left on a two week holiday and finally moved back, to Newfoundland, February 2015. The years in between I lived in Venezuela, Berlin and Munich where I raised my now 25 year old amazing daughter, Emilia-Louisa.
I had bought a sweet heritage salt box, “Alice House” in the classic CFA (Come from Away) story we hear about, on my first afternoon, in Bonavista 15 years ago. I immediately fell in love with this town, even though it had not begun its transformation to the “must visit location” in Newfoundland. This little darling of a house hosted many visitors, some, (YES, more than one!) who subsequently bought themselves a house and now live here full time as well.
In 2010 I moved part-time to Bonavista for the summers, running the shop part of Neil’s Yard, the fore runner,(not of Walkham’s Cafe which is the first and the ultimate local cafe in Bonavista, where I go regularly and you must visit) to the next generation of coffee/tea/restaurants and shops now located in Bonavista. My studio was upstairs, the shop carried the beautiful crafts of Newfoundland & Labrador Craft Council members and we held many cultural events including monthly art exhibitions and readings by Newfoundland authors.
At this time I bought another house that I renovated and rented out via Airbnb. It was one of only two Airbnb available in Bonavista at the time. This was bought by guests who now own and operate this gem themselves. You can read reviews on that site and you can rent it of course. Look for Hampton House, named after Mr. Hampton who built it for his wife to be. A million dollar view!!!
What’s this got to do with now? I am currently building a new, modern, ocean front property right beside Hampton House due to open May 24th weekend 2022 . Built on the footprint of a former garage, ArtBonavista Studio will be casual luxury with a distinct European flair. The house, and its garden across the street, are the best viewing spots for icebergs, whales, fishing boats heading out to sea, and, the spectacular sunsets Bonavista is known for. Like HH, ArtBonavista Studio has the million dollar view.
I’m an artist/maker, member of the Newfoundland & Labrador Craft Council & VANL-CARFAC.
I moved to Bonavista from Munich to head Bonavista Creative, part of Bonavista Living, for it’s first 2 years, bringing you new shops, restaurants, and many arts related projects.
Next came the Bonavista Biennale 2017 of which I am an original steering committee member, and, for which I was the location scout and community coordinator.
Check out their site for all updates for Bonavista Biennale 2021.
The next project I instigated, and helped establish, is Union House Arts, a community artspace in Historic Port Union. The building is home to an art gallery, community kitchen, workshop space, studios, and artist accommodations. Be sure to check out their programming! Well worth a visit.
The minimum stay at ArtBonavista Studio is 2 nights,
