Anthurium Hale is a homestay, operated by the owner who lives on site.

お部屋
Anthurium Hale is a well appointed home conveniently located in Waiakea Uka, a part of Hilo Town proper, approximately 2 miles from the University of Hawaii Hilo, 3 miles from the mall and grocery shopping with lots of dinning or fast food choices. The Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands but the population is somewhat sparse, thus a rental car is considered essential. We are 5 miles from the Hilo International Airport, 4 miles from Bayfront (old downtown Hilo,) 1 1/2 miles to the Saddle Road enterance. It is a quiet residential neighborhood but for the chirping of the coqui frogs in the evening, off the "main drag, " yet conveniently located. Distance to Volcano National Park is 30 miles and up to the top of Mauna Kea approximately 40 miles. .

Our home is very private as our objective is to create a little piece of paradise within the confines of the city, close to all of the conveniences, yet a place where one can relax, enjoy the solitude and smell the flowers. The interior decor is a rather eclectic mix that reflects both our passion for things of old, the arts and our love of nature. Our yard features koi ponds and exotic birds plus many wild visitors for our morning and evening feedings; Java Sparrows, Saffron Finchs, Cardinals, Rice Finches along with numerous Doves. It is extensively landscaped with blooming tropical flora plus ferns, palms and many Anthuriums.

This is also the "home" of Mandarin Books HAWAII, an online antiquarian entity that deals in rare books exclusively about the Pacific Rim/Oceania and the arts and antiques that relate to it's people.

We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our ohana. Should you have any questions or concerns along the way, don't hesitate to send us an email.

Aloha 'oe,
Jean

We have an element of privacy and connection with nature that most urban residences can not lay claim to yet we are a stones throw from the University of Hawaii and Hilo Community College, the downtown Bayfront area, (the Wednesday and Saturday Markets are a tradition since the latter 1800s), the Imiloa Astronomy Center, Prince Kuhio Mall, the Liliuokalani Japanese Gardens, Coconut Island, the Pana'ewa Rainforest and Zoo that is Free and of course within close proximity of Hilo's famous Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, Honoli'i Beach Park and Akaka Falls. Lapahoehoe, the settlemen wiped out by the 1946 Tsunami is located up the coast. Although the lower portion of the village was never rebuilt, the area is now a memorial park open to the public.

Hawaii became my home in the 1960s and I have lived in on the Big Island since 2000. Hilo is home to the MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL, a huge international Hula competition that is held every April. In my early years I frequently crewed on a charter fishing boat out of Kewalo Basin on Oahu which gave me the opportunity to travel by sea throughout the islands. I have visited them all, with the exception of Kahoolawe and Molokini and have crossed the channels more times than I can count. I have two children, growth and on their own. I am the owner and operator of the online antiquarian entity, MANDARIN BOOKS HAWAII that deals exclusively in rare and vintage Pacific Isle books and art. ( (Website hidden by Airbnb) This interest, fueled by a bit of passion for the sea further culminated in my "sailing" on a cruise ship from the mainland to Hawaii in the 70s and more recently having crewed, from Hawaii to the Tuamotus and French Polynesia on a 38 foot sailboat. I also spent a number of months living aboard and sailing on a 43 foot vessel in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, then sailed northward to Tonga, then American Samoa. I have also had the privilege of traveling on the mainland and visited Western Canada, Italy, Portugal, Japan, France and the Czech Republic. My travels have allowed me to experience the joy of adventuring to new places, of meeting people from various parts of the world and the comforts that are so relished when one is off and away. Of course, there's no place like home and I think Hawaii is the most wonderful place on earth, but I do look forward to more travels in the future, perhaps the Galapogos or back to Franch Polynesia or Japan (?) So allow me to share my home with you, As they say in Hawaii, let's get together and "talk story."
