Alder Brook Cottage: A Tiny House in the Woods
Alder Brook Cottage: A Tiny House in the Woods

Featured in Boston Magazine, We Love Vermont, and CabinPorn, Alder Brook Cottage is an inspired, rustic dream cabin located in the woods of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Surrounded by a crystal clear stream and 1400 acres of forest, it is the perfect getaway for glampers looking to experience the tiny house life. Minutes away from Caspian Lake, Hill Farmstead Brewery, Jasper Hill Farm, and Craftsbury Outdoors Center.

**Read this: this is a rustic cottage—no electricity or running water, and you have to be okay with climbing a loft ladder AND using an outhouse.**

When I was young, I had a dream in which I lived in a tiny house in the woods. I still remember every detail of it. As I went through my teens and twenties, the dream never faded…and so, in 2015, my girlfriend and I decided to give it a try. We bought land in the woods of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, and guided by our hearts and many books, we built a tiny house.

After you park off the (paved) road, you’ll cross a wooden footbridge over a stream and climb a rocky staircase into the forest. After a couple hundred feet, the house appears in the trees. Inside you’ll find a sunny, cozy space that is perfect for relaxing in the beauty of the woods. There is a kitchenette with a stove and pots and pans, a bathroom with a composting toilet and a shower basin, a fold-out daybed, a wood stove, a pull-down table, bookshelves lined with some of my favorite books, and a loft with the most comfortable queen bed in Vermont.

**You’ll need to bring your own water (2 gallons per person per day is usually enough, and you can refill at a nearby spring on Route 14), and a bundle of firewood is appreciated in the cold months.

Behind the house is 1400 acres of untouched forest, cliffs, and streams. You’re 5 minutes from the town of Hardwick, with all modern conveniences available. You are nearby tons of pristine lakes and rivers, the best brewery in the world (Hill Farmstead Brewery...voted best in the world 2016), the best cheesemaker in the world (Jasper Hill Farm....also no joke), nordic skiing at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, mountain biking at Kingdom Trails, and ski resorts such as Stowe, Burke Mountain, Jay Peak, and many more.

We love this house and built it with our own hands. Please take care of it. If you use the wood stove, be extremely careful. They are wonderful, cozy inventions, but carelessness can be deadly!

Our stay at Alderbrook Cottage was wonderful. We used it as our home-base for exploring Vermont (extra points for proximity to Hill Farmstead!). We managed to catch the first snow and single-digit temps, but the wood burning stove kept us nice and cozy. The cabin had everything you would need and more. I'm already looking forward to coming back!

This tiny house was amazing. The perfect size and coziness. Lots of great hiking not too far of a drive away and the town of Hardwick is super cute! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to get away. The only disappointment was that there were no trails directly out the house, but like we said, there were tons only a short drive away!

This was our second trip to Hardwick to stay in this magical little cabin, my first ever repeat with airbnb. We love this place for its simplicity, coziness, and proximity to fun things in Vermont. I would highly recommend staying here for access to fall activities, fishing and hiking. It also makes for a great get-away from reality with its "off the grid" location and amenities.

We absolutely loved our stay at this cabin! It was the perfect size for the two of us, and the wood stove made it super cozy. Even without running water, the kitchen area was incredibly functional and it was easy to clean our dishes in the sink. Kyle was also very responsive and accommodating to our schedule. I also appreciated that he checked in mid-stay to make sure we had everything we needed.

My husband and I stayed in Kyle's tiny house for part of our honeymoon and it was our favorite part of our trip, hands down. Kyle was easy to communicate with and very thoughtful. The place was lovely, peaceful, and gave us the perfect opportunity to disconnect and have romantic, candlelit conversations. We loved the tiny space, and also felt that it was more spacious than we even thought it would be. Even the outhouse, which I was a little nervous about beforehand, was a pleasant surprise - super easy and smelled like cedar! Kyle's recommendations for things to do nearby were awesome - we highly recommend checking out Hardwick and the little diner on the creek. We also loved Greensboro - the brewery is fantastic. All-in-all a wonderful experience and would love to visit again one day.

We made one mistake and that was not staying a few more nights. Awesome place that lived up to the billing. My girlfriend and I were at the beginning of a weeklong vacation throughout the northeast. I had planned on proposing later in the week but being in the cabin was just too romantic to pass up; we got engaged at the fold down table in the living room! A quick jaunt down the path from the road makes it easy to visit spots in the area, but you wouldn't know it was nearby a road except for hearing the occasional car. All the features that most people aren't familiar with (wood burning stove, propane oven, DIY shower) are laid out in easy to follow instructions. I highly recommend stopping at Connies in Hardwick as well, outstanding breakfast at an incredible value. Kyle was quick and responsive to any questions we had. We'll most certainly be back!

Kyke's cabin is amazing. It is a real adventure just staying there. Completely off grid you spend your evenings candle-lit by the the stove giving it a real authentic feeling of being in the woods. If I could change one thing I would make a wooden ladder to complete the appearance - oh and a washing up bowl - the kitchen sink was too high and deep for me - but then I am very short! it was an absolute delight to stay here and one of the high lights of our holiday!
You were an absolute delight to host, Lynden! Come back any time. I totally hear you about the wooden ladder. We actually had one for a while, but the problem is that it always takes up space — the retractable ladder was the solution we found for letting the floor stay open. Maybe I'll be able to think up some type of folding/stow-away ladder though..let me know if you have any ideas. Regarding the sink, I'll bring in a stool for shorter guests. Thanks again! 3
