Want to experience something different in Asheville? Looking to relax & rejuvenate but also easy access to everything? My home is a hybrid of modern & traditional, Asian & Western, modern & cozy. Walking distance to many local favorites in W. Asheville, the feel & tone of my home is quiet, contemplative, & refreshing. Birds & butterflies abound the garden & yard. Exquisite & rare teas for the palate and healing & meditative incense for the spirit (for those who desire so). I #HostwithPride.

お部屋
Enhance your visit to Asheville by treating yourself to some "zen" in a home in West Asheville. Completed in April '13, my home (which I live in, full-time) is where you can rest your body and rejuvenate your spirit. "Modern Meets Zen" is within walking distance to many local favorites - 7 minutes walk to Sunny Point Cafe (rated "Best Brunch" in Asheville) & Oyster House Brewing Co., 8 minutes to West Asheville Yoga, 12 minutes to Biscuit Head, West End Bakery, 9 Mile, The Hop Ice-cream, & 20 minutes walk to King Daddy's Chicken & Waffles, The Admiral and other favorite local joints, Battlecat Cafe. You can easily get to Downtown Asheville - 8 minutes by car via I-240, or 30-35 minutes bike ride through artsy River Arts District. In under 20 minutes you can be on your way to hiking trails, parkways and other outdoor attractions in mountains of Western North Carolina.

Your room has a built-in Japanese-style tatami mat platform with a comfortable bed on it (see the great things guests have said about the bed in my Reviews section!). A tatami is a type of mat used as flooring material in traditional Japanese homes and is made of rice straw to form the core. Tatamis are cooling in the summer but also keep heat very well in the winter making them a "green" option for room-flooring.

Special Chinese-style tea-service can be arranged during your stay (You'll need at least 45 mins to spare for this). Just ask when you reserve your stay. [SORRY - Covid19 “season” means this can’t be done!]

I live here as well and I am happy to engage as much or as little as you wish - just let me know.

[Note: There is one queen-sized bed in room as well as a single futon serving as a couch-seat that can be put flat on the tatami-platform to be used as a second bed.]

[IMPORTANT: There is only space for ONE guest vehicle parking. A second vehicle will have to be parked on neighboring streets.]

ゲストの立ち入り範囲
I live in this space & so we'll be in the same house for a few days. [Luckily, I do shower daily & I don't bite. I'm also not home much.]

Guests will have access to all parts of the house except for the bedroom upstairs [my room - best you are not exposed to my mess!]

[COVID19: To keep everyone safe, the kitchen will not be available for guest use until conditions change. Also, we should avoid being in the living room at the same time for more than 5-10 minutes max.]

Guests can also do a wash if they so wish - there's a washer & dryer in the house with detergent etc. Feel free to use the kitchen range, pots & pans, kitchenware etc., microwave oven, fridge etc. but please clean up after using.

Wifi available.

その他の特記事項
Note that the main bed in the room isn't a futon but a regular mattress with a very comfortable "posture-pedic" mattress pad on top. The futon mentioned somewhere in this listing is a second, single bed that normally is folded up as a mini-couch but can be used as a bed for a third guest.

You will have access to a meditation space in Downtown Asheville (Tuesdays to Sundays noon-5pm) if you so wish to use it while here - just ask!

From a local real estate website: "West Asheville is an area that moves easily between its old-world history and new-world energy, enjoying the charm of its neighborhoods and the spirit of its quaint main street. It's both down-to-earth and cutting-edge, with 1920's bungalows and eco-built new homes, with old brick buildings that house innovative businesses, with appreciation for its stories and excitement for its future."

And from the "Explore Asheville" website: "West Asheville's funky vibe translates into a varied mix of eateries. Happening on this unique neighborhood leaving downtown Asheville, you encounter boutiques and cafés lining Haywood Avenue. This West Asheville hub of activity is in the midst of a neighborhood renaissance."

I first came to Asheville 2003 and after a five-year stint teaching at Warren Wilson College, I moved two hours away because of a new job only to return five more years later. Perhaps it has something to do with the "vortex" in Asheville that some folks here talk about but probably more to do with the relationships that I have cultivated here, the people and their values, the mountains that surround us, the great climate, the restaurants and bookstores. I was born and raised in Malaysia but have lived longer in the United States than I have in Asia now. I have traveled a bit, mostly to Asia - 5 trips to Tibet, 4 to India, 6 to China, several to Taiwan, Thailand, Bhutan other Asian countries, Chile, Peru, Guatemala and a sprinkling of European countries. I've also lived a year in London and loved it. I'm a hybrid of quiet and gregarious, easy-going with others and meticulous with myself. I don't smoke, I'm not into mind-altering substances and I don't drink (but don't have a problem with others drinking). I spend a lot of time at a downtown, spiritual (Buddhist) center but I am capable of talking about things other than meditation and mindfulness! Especially food. And food.

I will interact as much as guests want me to, although I am often out & about in town. You should feel free calling or texting me when you're in town and have a question about where to eat, or you've lost your way, or just want a third option opinion on which cafe to hangout in!

I am the spiritual director of a Buddhist community in town (Urban Dharma North Carolina) and I also travel nationally and internationally to teach at different communities and venues.
