In this 2-hour class you will create two 12" x 12" abstract paintings on professional acrylic paper. We will start class with discussing the benefits of using acrylic paint on paper, and I will give a quick overview of the materials we will be using. Then, I will teach you about several strong composition styles, and give you a mini-lesson on color theory. I will also demonstrate various techniques such as using painting mediums and alternative tools to create a variety of effects, and will show my own paintings as examples. You will have the remainder of the time to paint with my guidance. During the last 5-minutes of class we will critique each other's work and share what we learned to close out the session. Your paintings will be easy to transport back home as they are on heavy-duty paper and lay flat. You will find abstract painting a liberating and relaxing experience, and by the end of class will have the knowledge you need to easily do it at home
All art materials necessary for the class: artist-quality watercolor paper, acrylic paint, mediums, brushes, aprons.
An artist for 25 years, I have a Bachelor’s in Art History, Masters in Art Education, and have been teaching art to teenagers and adults for 12 years. I have exhibited my work in five solo and nine group shows, including "Feminists Under Forty," which was curated by Judy Chicago. My experience includes working with total novices as well as advanced artists looking to bring their work to the professional level. My paintings are featured in E. Ashley Rooney's "Contemporary Art of the Southwest" (2014), and I am currently represented by galleries in New Orleans and San Jose del Cabo.
Participants will take the class in my sunny, private art studio about 15 minutes from the Santa Fe plaza. I live in a semi-rural area of Santa Fe in a neighborhood that boasts beautiful views of the mountains, as well as horses, llamas, chickens, chefs, teachers, landscape architects and artists.
My studio is about 15 minutes from the Santa Fe plaza. Please contact me should you want driving directions.
