During this inspiring day you will learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing, a craft that has been used for hundreds of years. I will demonstrate how to use the forge and the anvil in a meaningful and productive way. You will learn the proper way to heat and strike the metal and shape it into a desired form/object. As a beginning blacksmith you can forge a spoon, a bottle opener, a simple knife and other small basic objects. I will offer a brief history of important blacksmithing tools, i.e. anvils, swedge blocks, tongs, hammers, forges, and other miscellaneous tools. I will give you a complete tour of my shop -my 19th century blacksmith trip hammer and a 21st century Chinese air hammer. I will also show you other equipment that I use such as welding equipment, an ironworker, metal band saw, metal lathe and drill presses. There will be 3 hours of comprehensive instruction and forging in the morning, a half hour break for lunch and 2 hours of open studio forging practice time in the afternoon under my expert tutelage.
