We start the walk on the harbour and walk to Skansinn and there we walk over the new lava from 1973. Me the local guide tells you about the eruption, the story when the people had to leave their home in one night. We walk on the edge of the lava where there is a great view of the town. From there we will go up the Volcano that is not a very difficult hike This walk is a great way to get to know the volcanic history of the island and get in touch with nature. The view over the island is beautiful and amazing. We end the Walk in the centre of town or where people want to end it.
Hello, my name is Auður and I am born and raised here in Westman Islands. I am a nurse and a guide. I´ve been working for a few years over the summer as a guide with most of the activity companies here on the island. What I love the most are my walks over the lava and up the volcano. There I can tell people the stories about my Island, the volcanic history and how it is living on the Island in a very close up and personal way.
We start the walk from the harbour and walk to Skansinn, there is the replica of the old fort from the 17th century and near there is the wooden church and Landlyst, the oldest house on the island, that has a lot of history. From Skansinn we walk up a small hill and walk over the new lava that was formed in the dramatic eruption in 1973. Then we walk up the volcano that is like five hills. There we can find the holes that are still warm.
