Our Smuggling and Resistance One-day Tour takes place in the tiny medieval Basque villages of Navarre in the Spanish Pyrenees. Less than an hour from Pamplona and San Sebastian. This area is the genetic cradle of the Basque people and the mountain paths echo with the footsteps of shepherds, smugglers, witches and refugees as well as the WW2 pilots who escaped over the borders with the help of the COMET escape lines. This tour offers you a back-stage entrance to what is sometimes called the Basque ‘Bermuda Triangle’ and we take you on a series of smugglers and resistance walks. The walks pass through 17th century mountain villages, bucolic farming hamlets and the deep-sided ravines of the Bidasoa river on the Spanish / French border. We have lunch in a traditional Michelin-recommended Basque mountain restaurant while we explore the themes of Basque superstitions, witchcraft and pagan beliefs. The day winds down at our Pyrenean Experience family home and walking centre high in the hills above Ituren with tapas and views of the valleys below. For groups of 4 people or more we can sometimes organise a private Basque music concert and wine tastings. Transport from Pamplona or San Sebastian to Irun is required either by taxi or public transport. For groups of 4 or more taxis can be provided. Walks available of different levels.
Hello - or as they say in Basque - ´Kaixo´. I have run a walking and Basque culture centre in the Pyrenees for 20 years and I have written many articles about the Basque culture, my speciality being the smuggling routes and WW2 resistance lines over the French / Spanish border. Articles I have written about the area have appeared in the international press and I am just putting the finishing touches on a book I am writing on the Basque Culture. My passion for the area is thanks to the Basque shepherds who have embraced me and helped me bring up my daughter. I love meeting people and introducing them to new cultures and landscapes - both human and natural. And this area is fun - the smuggling stories read like a chapter from Robin Hood! I speak English, French, Spanish, Danish - some German and Italian and Basque. Thank you.
