1st half of my class is for basics. *A little anecdote of Nara’s beautiful Shodo tool history. *Learn basic posture of body, arms and hands for effective writing. *I demonstrate the brush stroke how the sense of art and technique are integrated. *Then, it is your turn to exercise a Kanji to master basic brush movement and your name in Katakata, by continuing strokes on the paper. Each guest will get my advice. Latter half of the class is for completion of your own work to bring home! You will try either the following options. 1) You will select your favorite Kanji for your work either from my recommendation list or you name (this time in Kanji) ! I will explain the meaning of Kanji and give advice for better mental condition during writing. 2) You can try the dynamic style writing (get inspiration from my writing style) depending on your progress or your preference. This is the highlight of the class to extend your imagination to express in your brush movement! Imagine how you become spiritually fulfilled when you succeed in writing your best one after many trials! Finally choose your favorite paper/artwork on which you will give final writing/or my writing to bring home. *After the class, let's enjoy your tea and Japanese sweets together! I hope if I convey the delight of Shodo calligraphy to the guests from the world!
I have studied Shodo under my Uncle “Hoseki” since 5 years old, and was given pseudonym ”Hokyu”. I was selected 6 times at several Exhibitions, and now I also serve as a Executive Director at a calligraphic association. I teach people of all ages the beauty of Shodo and the meanings the written characters have. I have my own dynamic writing style ( categorized as modern calligraphy), which I believe inspire you for your own trial at my class. It was more than 2K years ago when Shodo was introduced to Japan, and was promoted by the ancient emperor with buddhism sutra copying among people here in Nara around 600 years after that. Therefore so many quality and artistic tools have also been made in Nara. In my class, you can also enjoy meeting several artistic tools from my collection. Why not start enjoying your Shodo with me?

Class room is just one minute walk from Kintetsu Nara station, which is a pottery gallery I rent, having a very cultural ambiance. This class room is located on the second floor of a café (famous for Tapioca drinks), so you can first enter this cafe and use the stairs inside to come to my class room.
The class room is on the 2nd floor with no lifts, therefore it is not barrier-free for access.
